Position Summary:
The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Retail Coordinator, who has an authentic interest in the mission and work of the VMHC. The Retail Coordinator is responsible for the growth and long-term success of a revenue generating-portfolio that includes an on-site museum store and e-commerce platform. The Coordinator will be responsible for all purchasing, licensing, order fulfillment, and merchandising related to these areas. The Coordinator will also work directly with the Director of Guest Engagement and the Guest Engagement team who help facilitate on-site retail sales in the museum store.
In the museum store, the Retail Coordinator will thoughtfully source retail items and food and beverage offerings that are made in Virginia (when able) and are representative of the Commonwealth’s diverse regional traditions and history. Working with the Director of Events & Hospitality Services, the Coordinator will establish revenue goals for retail sales while ensuring that the museum’s offerings help guests make meaningful connections to history, the VMHC’s current exhibits, and the story of Virginia.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Procure retail offerings that highlight Virginia history, culture, and the VMHC brand
- Develop effective sales strategies and plan for on-site merchandising and e-commerce sales
- Implement appropriate retail inventory practices and maintain accurate records
- Work with the VMHC Marketing department to coordinate promotion of sales and new products
- Create a positive work environment and be a visible presence in the museum store
- Identify ways in which retail services can support ongoing museum programs, events, and work with the Events & Hospitality Services team to provide retail support for facility rentals, events, and meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:
- Knowledge of point of sales systems as well as retail best practices
- Ability to achieve results in a high-pressure environment
- Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Previous retail operations, preferably in a museum setting
- E-commerce experience preferred
Note & Special Requirements:
- Standard weekly work schedule for this role is Tuesday – Saturday.
