Annual Conference Scholarship and Volunteer Opportunities

Ways to save on conference registration

VAM Conference Scholarships

The Daniel H. Weiskotten Memorial Scholarship has been created to provide financial assistance to archaeologists, public historians, and students who would benefit from attending the VAM annual conference. This scholarship is given to one applicant per year, and includes full conference registration as well as hotel costs for two nights.

Applicants for this scholarship should fall into one of the following categories:

  • A professional archaeologist employed by a museum or historic site in Virginia or the District of Columbia, and currently working with an archaeological dig or with archaeological artifacts
  • A person who is actively engaged in researching and interpreting local history for exhibits or public programs in Virginia or the District of Columbia
  • A student at a Virginia or District of Columbia school preparing to enter the field of archaeology, public history, or museum studies

The VAM Professionals Scholarships help to fund registration and hotel costs for VAM members and students who would otherwise be unable to attend the annual conference.  In order to assist as many qualified applicants as possible, most of these scholarships provide partial funding for conference expenses.  All awards are made through a competitive process, and are based primarily on demonstrated financial need.

Applicants for this scholarship should fall into one of the following categories:

  • A current member of VAM
  • A museum studies student
  • A new museum professional (in your first year of your first professional museum job)

To apply for either scholarship, complete the application by January 31, 2019, and return to jthomas@vamuseums.org.

Note: If you have received a scholarship from VAM in the past two years, you are not eligible to apply for either scholarship program.

VAM Conference Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are imperative to the success of VAM's annual statewide conferences and are needed to help with a variety of tasks. Please read instructions below and on the volunteer signup website as details have changed from previous years.

  • Volunteering is first come, first served and you must be a current member of VAM to qualify.
  • The Volunteer Registration rate is $75; we ask that you provide 6-7 hours of volunteer time during the conference to receive this discount.
  • Due to the fact that the conference activities and events will take place at various sites in Lynchburg, it is imperative that you read the details about each assignment and make note of the location.
  • You will receive a volunteer registration form to proceed with registration once your assignments and membership are verified and tasks are filled.
  • For questions, contact Christina Newton, Assistant Director, at 804-358-3170 or cnewton@vamuseums.org

Volunteer as a Social Media Reporter-New!

This year, we are offering a new volunteer opportunity as well.  If you are interested in applying to be one of our social media reporters at the conference, sign up hereThis is a competitive process; all applications are due January 31, 2019. and 2 members will be selected and notified by February 8th that they are our social media reporters for 2019.

What is a social media reporter?

VAM staff can never be everywhere we want to be at the conference.  We need volunteers who will both record the happenings at the conference, and share photos and events on social media.  Because we will have an interactive mobile app for the conference this year, we also want these reporters to post photos on the app for other conference-goers to see,

This task will run through the whole conference, but by the nature of the task, you will be able to fully enjoy the conference sessions, events and meals--as long as you post and record what you are experiencing!

Our two social media reporters will receive the volunteer rate of $75 for the full conference.
