Position Title - Volunteer Coordinator

Compensation - $17.50/hour

Job Type - part-time; Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30.

Summary - Play a leading role in Sky Meadows State Park and foster the connection and growth of the park’s volunteerism. We are an 1,860-acre park with 23 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, a variety of wildlife habitats, back country campground, and historic sites dating back to the 1800s. Through this position you will grow and connect volunteers, creating bonds, to help carry out the park’s mission. 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Actively recruit, onboard, and train new volunteers to build and sustain core volunteer units. The position works closely with core unit supervisors to support training and scheduling needs.

  • Maintain the volunteer database and records, managing the volunteer benefit program, the monthly distribution of a volunteer newsletter, and program assistance.

  • Conduct volunteer training with core groups and evaluation of interpretative volunteers.

  • Seek and coordinate volunteer groups such as Alternative Spring Break, Youth Conservation Corps, corporate volunteer groups, and scout projects.

  • Coordinate of the park’s group volunteer partners, supporting the efforts of the Friends of Sky Meadows, Northern Virginia Astronomy Club, the Shenandoah Chapter Virginia Master Naturalists, and other support organizations.

  • Take a leading role in the project development of park special events; coordination and issuing special use permits to vendors.

  • Provide general interpretative/ programming support, and other duties as assigned.

The Volunteer & Special Events Coordinator must be able to communicate with diverse audiences, maintain accurate and confidential records, and maintain up to date knowledge on Virginia State Park Volunteerism best practices. The Volunteer & Special Events Coordinator will train and supervise work of volunteers and work closely with the park’s Lead Interpreter and Chief Ranger Visitor Experience.

Minimum Qualifications -

Applicant must have the ability to foster and grow a diverse volunteer base, work outdoors in all types of weather, stand for long periods, traverse uneven ground, carry, pull and (or) lift up to 40 lbs. unassisted. All applicants must have a desire to learn and ask questions of the park’s history and its’ artifacts, poses strong communication skills, and have a positive attitude. Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing; excellent organizational skills. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Additional Considerations - Experience in developing programming and supervision of employees/volunteers is desired. Previous park experience is a plus. 

For all positions, experience is not required, but is preferred. Weekends and holiday work required. We provide on the job training. Employees may be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies, or on a non-recurrent basis. There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits.
