Unit Mission Statement

The Mission of the Muscarelle Museum of Art is: To foster the full integration of a dynamic art museum into the life and liberal arts mission of The William & Mary and to serve as a model of curatorial excellence and a catalyst for art exploration at the university and in the surrounding community.

Position Summary

The Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary is seeking to engage a temporary, contract Museum Collections Specialist.
Primary duties will include but not be limited to the following.
    • Assist with a systematic inventory and tracking of location changes of objects.
    • Assist with condition reports and database updates.
    • Take images of various objects and assist with maintaining photographic documentation of all processes.
    • Other related duties as assigned.

This part-time, temporary position will run from late September through mid-December.  Expected schedule is 30 hours a week.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in a museum, historic house or library setting.
• Demonstrated ability to follow directions and to work independently and collaboratively.
• Outstanding attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
• Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and prioritize.
• Demonstrated ability to perform activities associated with handling art and mounting exhibitions.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, or library and information science
Conditions of Employment
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

• This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations         of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over         the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.

• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position        may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
