Job Description
Part-Time Historical Services Position
Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is seeking a motivated, outgoing, and customer-focused individual with an interest in historical preservation, education, and community programming. This part-time position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with a diverse community and supporting programs, events, and facilities that promote local history and recreation.
The position primarily supports Historical Services operations at various facilities and may also provide administrative, programming, and event support throughout the department. Responsibilities include customer service, daily facility operations, historical programming, recordkeeping, and general event and facility support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent customer service to residents, visitors, volunteers, program participants, community groups, and employees in person, by telephone, and electronically.
  • Conduct daily visitor and storefront operations, including point-of-sale (POS) transactions, memberships, program registration, rentals, gift shop sales, visitor information, inventory, and ordering.
  • Use ActiveNet to process transactions and deposits and maintain proper cash-handling procedures in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the development, scheduling, and implementation of interpretive and educational programs, tours, field trips, exhibitions, workshops, preservation activities, and special events.
  • Assist with the writing, design, and installation of interpretive signs, panels, labels, and other educational materials.
  • Assist with the inspection, documentation, inventory, and preservation of historic structures, artifacts, collections, and other historical assets.
  • Maintain databases, records, logs, itineraries, inventories, work orders, and other documentation related to historical collections, heritage tourism, programs, events, and facility operations.
  • Perform general administrative and office duties, including filing, copying, data entry, proofreading, and processing routine reports and paperwork.
  • Assist with basic facility operations, housekeeping, and general oversight to help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming facilities.
  • Support the setup, breakdown, and cleanup of City-sponsored events, including arranging tables, chairs, displays, and recreational equipment and assisting with post-event activities.
  • Assist with departmental special projects, programs, events, and other Parks, Recreation, and Tourism activities as assigned.


Work locations may include Historical Village, Northwest River Park, Chesapeake Arboretum, the Portlock Museums, and administrative offices.

Ideal candidates will have strong communication and organizational skills, enjoy working with the public, and have an interest in local history, historic preservation, education, tourism, and community programming. The ability to work independently, as well as as part of a team, is important.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires an associate’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in physical education or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliancewith the City Driving Standards. Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Passion for local history.

Team-oriented with excellent customer service skills and have an interest in dealing with the public, working with various groups of people and interacting with all facets of the department.

Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment; effectively communicate with the public.

Some experience in planning, marketing, and conducting indoor, outdoor, historical related activities and programming, working with vendors, exhibitors, sponsors, and citizen groups.
