The Public Engagement Coordinator guides the public’s experience of local history for the Lynchburg Museum System (“LMS”) and Lynchburg Museum Foundation (“Foundation”). The Public Engagement Coordinator works with other museum staff members and volunteers to ensure effective and efficient daily operation of the Lynchburg Museum at the Old Court House and Point of Honor.

The Public Engagement Coordinator is an employee of the City of Lynchburg (“City”) and reports directly to the Museum Director. This position helps to fulfill the missions and visions of the City, LMS, and Foundation:

To deliver services to City residents, workers, and visitors in an efficient, effective, and equitable manner and to build a stronger community

To collect, interpret, preserve, and share the history and culture of Lynchburg, Virginia, and the surrounding area

To conduct activities to support and assist the growth and development of the Lynchburg Museum System


As a member of the City of Lynchburg’s official public history office, the Public Engagement Coordinator helps to facilitate meaningful connections between the Lynchburg community and local history. The Public Engagement Coordinator ensures that all who engage LMS—local visitors, tourists, and students—learn from the places they visit, both in person and online.

Candidates must be motivated and passionate about connecting people with local history. They must be “people oriented” and able to build new relationships and maintain existing ones. Candidates must be comfortable working with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

The Public Engagement Coordinator’s primary duties include making independent decisions and managing significant matters that impact the general operations of the Lynchburg Museum System.

Community Engagement
• Develop inclusive community engagement strategies and outreach campaigns that support LMS/LMF mission, vision, and official plans
• Lead new digital media outreach initiatives
• Monitor and measure the success of community engagement efforts and take corrective action when necessary

Partnerships and Collaborations
• Cultivate and strengthen partnerships and collaborations with diverse individuals and organizations in the community, including the Office of Economic Development & Tourism, Lynchburg City Schools, and area arts and cultural groups

Public Programming
• Design and implement engaging and educational tours, programs, events, and activities for visitors of all ages and backgrounds
• Develop educational opportunities based on best practices and in consultation with experts in the field
• Coordinate and assist with all special events, off-site outreach appearances, and facility rentals
• Conduct audience research to measure program effectiveness and quality, making improvements as necessary
• Schedule staff and volunteers for program support as needed
• Maintain overall visitation and community engagement data

• Develop and submit an annual budget for all expenses and revenues related to the Museum's community engagement (programs, tours, special events, school field trips, etc.)

Additional Job Functions

• May be required to perform a variety of duties in support of high level organizational projects or as a back-up to other staff
• Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
• When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

• The Public Engagement Coordinator has no supervisory responsibilities, although the position may be asked to lead team projects.

• Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university; some experience in teaching or providing educational programs; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Intermediate Microsoft Windows 7/10 computer operating system skills
• Intermediate Microsoft Office software skills, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint programs
• Basic proficiency with social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
• Basic proficiency with Google Workspace apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Additional Requirements
• Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to City criteria
• Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
• Must successfully complete criminal background check
