Position Title – Museum Aide

Assists in the operation of the information desk and Museum lobby, administrative offices and/or special events in the Hampton History Museum.

Examples of Work
  • Receives visitors and provides general information to the public.

  • Assists in the preparation and coordination of special events at the Hampton History Museum. Opens and closes Museum in conjunction with special events when required.

  • Acts as a Museum Docent when required.

  • Maintains order and cleanliness in exhibit areas as needed. Ensures exhibit areas are prepared for visitors when opening Museum, and ensures all visitors have departed exhibit areas when closing Museum. May provide assistance to Museum Administrator when exhibits are installed and removed.

  • Assists administrative offices with routine clerical, recordkeeping or related duties as needed.

  • Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance.

  • Performs other related duties as required.



Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED. College coursework in the field of History, Museum Studies or a related field preferred. Minimum of one (1) year work experience in customer service required. Some experience in teaching the subject of history, preferably in a museum education environment preferred.

Knowledge of Hampton's history and geographical area preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; must be able to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships; must be able to interact with the general public with courtesy and diplomacy. An acceptable combination of education and experience that qualifies an applicant may be considered in lieu of the more specific requirements outlined above.

Must successfully pass a background check related to this position.


Perform duties under the general supervision of the Museum Administrator or his/her designee. The incumbent will be assigned to different functions on an as needed basis as determined by schedule of events. Considerable contact with the general public. Duties are performed during office hours, nights, weekends and holidays as required. This is a non-exempt position.
