HORTICULTURIST / GARDENER – Part Time

Pay Rate: $20 - 25 per hour     

Responsibilities  

• Hands-on maintenance of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees in planted areas. 

• Physical work in all aspects of garden maintenance and development including soil preparation, planting & transplanting, mulching, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, propagating, potting, raking, sweeping, blowing and edging. 

• Safe and effective use of hand tools, care of same. 

• Occasional safe operation of power tools including but not limited to weed whackers, blowers, pole saws and garden ATVs. 

• Contribute new ideas and techniques to landscape planning. 

Skills and Abilities  

• Knowledge of horticultural practices and plant materials. 

• Strength, dexterity, and coordination to bend, squat, kneel, stand and walk for extended periods of time. Must be able to work out-of-doors in Central Virginia seasonal extremes. 

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. 

• Willingness to interact with the public on an informal basis by answering questions, providing directions, etc. 

• Ability to work reliably (independently and collaboratively) on a flexible schedule. 

Education and Experience 

• Required 

• Possession of a valid driver's license. 

Preferred 

• An Associate's (or higher) degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field. 

• Experience as a professional gardener or groundskeeper. 

• Other combinations of education/experience appropriate to the position will be considered.
