Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in history, public history, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field; experience as a living history interpreter or educator in a museum or historic site is required; teaching experience in the fields of history, anthropology, or elementary education preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of Anglo-Powhatan material culture, including tools, food, weapons, and clothing, etc. of both the English and Powhatan people preferred. Outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to physically start and maintain fires, cut firewood, trees and brush, garden, and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be comfortable wearing a mix of reproduction 17th century Virginia Indian clothing and English clothing. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.


Under the direction of the Henricus Historical Park Interpretation Supervisor, the living history interpreter position demonstrates the lifeways and skills of the Powhatan people and will wear a mix of reproduction 17th century Virginia Indian clothing and English clothing. The interpreter conducts academic research using sources in archaeology, written historical accounts, and other credible sources.  The Powhatan interpreter will be trained and become well-versed in period labors and skills including, but not limited to, starting and maintaining fires, cooking, dugout canoe crafting, gardening, net weaving, and the manufacture and use of Powhatan bows, arrows and other implements. The Powhatan interpreter will be trained to facilitate and teach important portions of SOL/Core Curriculum-aligned Powhatan Indian education programs in consultation with the Henricus Education Department.  Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the Powhatan Indian site village, including structures and agricultural areas. Performs other work as required.
