Job Description

The Educator aids in the fulfillment of the Garden’s mission by assisting in the development, administration and implementation of a dynamic array of programs designed specifically for youth and accompanying adults (teachers, parents, care providers) of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. They will present nature-based programs infused with a sense of discovery and joy, provide administrative assistance for program registration, and contribute to the upkeep of the Children’s Garden, including horticultural projects.


  • Aids in the development, implementation, and facilitation of all programs, including Pre-K-12 school groups; summer camps; after school; professional development for educators; scouts; family drop-in; and birthday parties
    • Tracks evaluations of all group programs for grant reporting
  • Supports community engagement efforts, including building partnerships to reach broad audiences
  • Assists with summer camp logistics
    • Processes registration through ActiveNet; communicates with guardians/caregivers
    • Schedules volunteers and provides training
    • Purchases supplies
  • Participates in the daily operations of the Children’s Garden
    • Assists with horticultural projects, including mulching, watering, weeding, and planting
    • Assists with daily tasks such as tidying loose parts, wiping down picnic tables, and sweeping pathways
    • Serves as manager on duty for the Children’s Garden, as scheduled
  • Provides support for and participates in garden-wide events and exhibitions
    • Aids in the development and creation of displays and programs for special events and changing exhibits

Additional Duties

  • Actively participates in staff training and department meetings
  • Completes American Red Cross First Aid and CPR training
  • Occasional weekend, evening and holiday hours

  • Demonstrated knowledge of formal and informal education principles and developmentally appropriate practices
  • Communicates effectively with diverse ages, backgrounds and all abilities
  • Works well independently as well as thrives in a team environment; adaptable and solution-oriented
  • Energetic and personable; an innovative, creative thinker
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and group facilitation
  • Excellent organizational skills; self-motivated with the ability to manage goals and productivity
  • Beginner to intermediate experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency with databases and social media platforms
  • Ability to pass rigorous background checks

Education and Experience

  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, environmental sciences, botany, biology, agriculture, related fields or content knowledge in the natural sciences
    • Prior experience in botanical garden/museum setting
  • Required: Demonstrated experience with the design and delivery of innovative, creative, high quality, and developmentally appropriate programs for all ages, backgrounds and abilities
