Position Title – Director of Visitor Experience

Salary - $20 per hour

Job Type - Full-Time

Position Objective:  

The Director of Visitor Experience is primarily responsible for ensuring exceptional interpretation and visitor experiences that are innovative and comprehensive. Wilton House Museum strives to be a public resource for education, conversation, and understanding, and this position will play a critical role in achieving that goal. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high-quality visitor experience at the Wilton House Museum, and recruit, train, and manage part-time staff, interns, and docents who will do the same.
  • Build collaborative relationships with local museums and the decorative arts community.
  • Work closely with the executive director on exhibition and program development of the Museum, including developing engaging exhibitions, programs, and activities.
  • Lead on organizing the annual symposium and lecture series.
  • Research, write, and conduct lectures, tours, and programs.
  • Assist with the Museum’s social media content and engagement.
  • Work with the executive director to increase community engagement.
  • Provide supervision for frontline services by volunteers and interns, including front desk, group visits, educational programs, and special events. Coordinate special admissions, such as group tours, membership admissions, private tours, or special requests, in conjunction with other museum staff. 
  • Oversee cash transactions for sales and programs, reconcile accounts, and maintain income reports.
  • As needed, oversee the reception and visitor information areas, including brochures, signage, and other information systems. 
  • Participate in museum events and programs, including set-up assistance before or during the event. 
  • Evaluate short-term and long-term needs for the frontline museum operations and provide strategies for improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher with a focus on Public History, Museum Studies, Decorative Arts, or other similar background.
  • A passion for the decorative arts, museum field, and historical research.
  • Proven experience in working in a museum environment.
  • Flexible approach to working as part of a team and a desire for effective working relationships with colleagues, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Experience with working technology for social media, videos, and virtual programs.
  • Engaging writing and public speaking skills.
