Collections and Exhibitions Specialist
Day-to-day responsibilities include the following:
- Cleaning exhibition galleries each morning and assessing collection stewardship needs.
- Assisting with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions in the galleries, gardens, and trails. These activities will include writing and mounting labels, assisting with the shipment of objects, packing and unpacking objects, object condition reports and hanging artwork.
- Assisting with the management and registration of the collection including accessioning, deaccessioning, cataloging, rehousing objects, packing and unpacking objects, and maintaining inventory.
- Responding to research requests.
- Assisting with scholarly use of and access to the collection.
Additional duties include:
- Attending department, division, and MSV staff meetings.
- Developing and presenting public programs related to the collections as requested.
- Participating in opening events, evening, and weekend programs as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field such as history, museum studies, art or equivalent experience.
- Six months’ minimum experience in collections and/or exhibitions at a cultural institution/museum.
- Experience with handling museum objects.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
- Proficiency with Collections Management software such as PastPerfect preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficiency in conducting research.
- Experience with measuring devices, mat cutters, power tools, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and ladders preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to focus on completing tasks.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.; ability to step up onto platforms while carrying heavy objects; ability to walk backwards while carrying heavy objects. Strength and mobility are requisites of this position.
- Ability to work occasional weekends &/or evening special events.
This is a full-time position with work hours primarily Monday–Friday, 8am – 4pm with occasional evening and weekends required. The MSV offers an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, retirement plan, and generous time off, including parental leave.
