Membership and Communications Coordinator (PT)                      

Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) - Richmond, VA

Position Summary 

The Membership and Communications Coordinator supports the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) through the development and implementation of strategic communications and marketing initiatives that strengthen member engagement, increase program participation, and promote the mission and visibility of the organization. This position is responsible for managing VAM’s weekly e-newsletter, coordinating social media content, assisting with membership database management, and collaborating closely with the Director of Membership and Programs on the promotion and implementation of VAM events, educational programming, and other initiatives. 

Reports To: Director of Membership and Programs 

Compensation - $20 per hour/20 hours per week 

Benefits – 2 weeks paid time off (inclusive of vacation and sick leave) 

Paid Holidays – VAM is closed for all Virginia State Holidays (15 holidays annually) 

Employment Type: Hybrid (Office-Based Work, Telework, and occasional travel)  

Part-time; non-exempt;

Key Responsibilities 

Communications & Marketing 

  • Collaborate with VAM staff to develop and manage VAM’s communications and program calendar to ensure timely and consistent messaging across platforms. 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Membership and Programs to create, edit, and distribute the weekly VAM e-newsletter, including gathering content, drafting copy, formatting, and scheduling distribution. 

  • Maintain brand consistency across all communications materials and digital platforms. 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Membership and Programs to draft promotional materials for programs, events, workshops, conferences, advocacy initiatives, and membership campaigns. 

  • Monitor communication analytics across VAM platforms and provide recommendations for increasing engagement and reach.  

 Social Media Management 

  • Create and schedule regular social media content across VAM platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other relevant channels. 

  • Develop engaging graphics, captions, and promotional campaigns in Canva that highlight VAM programming, member news, and sector-related initiatives. 

  • Monitor social media engagement and respond to comments or messages as appropriate. 

  • Track social media performance metrics and identify opportunities for growth and audience engagement. 

 Program Promotion & Collaboration 

  • Collaborate with VAM staff to develop and implement promotional strategies for VAM programming and events 

  • Collaborate with VAM staff in creating marketing materials and campaigns for conferences, webinars, workshops, networking events, fundraising initiatives, and membership outreach 

  • Collaborate with VAM staff on promotional timelines and ensure communications align with organizational goals and deadlines 

  • Support outreach efforts with partner organizations, sponsors, presenters, and members 

 Membership Outreach and Database Management 

  • Assist the Director of Membership and Programs to organize and manage the membership database through membership processing and renewals 

  • Assist VAM staff and collaborate to develop new membership/sustained giving campaigns and other membership initiatives 

  • Assist Director of Membership and Programs in membership dues/donation receipts and acknowledgements; create welcome packets for new members 

  • Monitor VAM’s main membership line and respond to inquiries as applicable 

 Website & Digital Content 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Membership and Programs on digital materials for the VAM website, including event information, news updates, program details, and membership resources 

  • Ensure digital content remains current, accurate, and accessible 

  • Assist the Director of Membership and Programs in creating member spotlight series and coordinating member-submitted articles of interest for VAM’s blog series 

 Work Environment 

  • Hybrid or remote work options may be available based on organizational needs 

  • Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for events and annual conference 

 Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, museum studies, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred 

  • 2–4 years of experience in communications, marketing, social media management, or nonprofit communications 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail 

  • Experience managing email marketing platforms and social media scheduling tools 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a collaborative environment. 

  • Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva is preferred 

  • Interest in museums, nonprofits, arts and culture, or membership organizations preferred 

 Preferred Skills 

  • Strong organizational and project management abilities 

  • Experience in creating and implementing membership campaigns 

  • Creative thinking and ability to develop engaging digital content 

  • Experience analyzing engagement metrics and adapting communication strategies accordingly 

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff and stakeholders 

 Requirements 

  • Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License and have reliable transportation to drive to VAM programming across the Commonwealth as needed (average trip once a month) 

  • Must live in or near the greater Richmond metro area to access VAM offices located inside the Virginia Museum of History & Culture
