Manager of Programs and Education - The Manager of Programs and Education will be the leading force in educational programming at Poplar Forest. The successful candidate will develop and execute compelling and innovative programming for our Hands-on-History Center that aligns with Virginia Standards of Learning. This position will oversee all school programming for on-site field trips, outreach to area schools, and the development of appropriate virtual programming. As part of this position, the successful candidate will create and implement programming, work with area teachers and school staff to schedule all field trips, manage a corps of volunteers who assist with school programs, and oversee all Hands-on-History collections.
The Manager of Programs and Education will also lead program initiatives for developing and implementing events such as performances, lectures, dinners, festivals, and private event rentals. This position will handle a wide range of event coordination and management tasks including (but not limited to) research, volunteer coordination, marketing coordination, contractor relations, menu details, decorations, invitations, social media awareness, entertainment, logistics, ticket sales, etc.
Working closely with the Director of Programs and Education, this position will play an integral role in visitor services. This position will share the responsibilities of the duty officer: opening and closing the property, operating the golf cart and handicapped lift, and leading tours of the historic house as needed. This position will need to effectively communicate with staff and volunteers to ensure that those giving tours and working with the general public provide the most accurate and up to date information that may affect the visitor experience.
The successful candidate must be highly organized, detail oriented, comfortable working independently and as part of a team, creative, and an excellent communicator. The selected candidate must be able to work weekends, evenings, and some holidays as needed.
Work closely with Hands-on-History Coordinator to learn how the Hands-on-History program currently functions with the intent to manage the Hands-on-History Center in the future
Develop new and innovative curriculum for the Hands-on-History Center that correlates with appropriate Virginia Standards of Learning
Develop outreach programming that can be used in local classrooms
Develop more virtual programming for classrooms and homeschool children
Oversee a volunteer corps, scheduling them for field trips and communicating all pertinent information with them including updating volunteer manual annually
Work with teachers and/or school administrators to schedule school groups, ensuring they have all necessary information for a well-organized visit
Track budget for Hands-on-History programs and assist Director of Programs and Education with developing budget for Hands-on-History
Work closely with Director of Programs and Education to develop new programming that can attract new audiences and provide sustainable revenue streams for Poplar Forest.
Coordinate and manage public programming on the property including, but not limited to: dinners, specialty evening tours, Naturalization Ceremonies, and other events as assigned
Work closely with the Director of Programs and Education to coordinate large scale events such as Face the Forest Obstacle Course Run, the Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival, July 4th, and other events as assigned
Oversee all private event rentals on the property including communicating rental policies with potential renters, ensuring all plans for private events are within perimeters of the rental policies, and overseeing event set up, clean up, and scheduling any needed staff and volunteers.
Ensure property is opened for public visitation during regular season and Winter Weekends and communicate any pertinent information to staff and volunteers working with the public.
Deliver quality tours and excellent customer service as needed
· Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or related field
· 3-5 years of experience working with school aged children preferred
· Ability to work an irregular schedule to accommodate events and programs
· Strong communication skills both oral and written
· Demonstrated leadership and project management abilities
· Ability to work independently and multi-task
· Highly motivated with an ability to adapt to change
