Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies, education, or a related field; at least two years of experience as a living history interpreter and/or educator in a museum or historic site setting; specialized period skills (for example as an historical brick mason, carpenter, blacksmith, farmer, or soldier); or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of early Virginia and American history including English Colonial, Powhatan, American Revolution, Early Republic, Antebellum, American Civil War and Reconstruction, and early 20th century. Must possess excellent research, oral, and written communication skills and an ability to engage effectively with all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions and to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Must be comfortable wearing historically accurate reproduction clothing. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
Duties
Under the direction of the Historical Interpretation Supervisor, the specialist living history Interpreter II will research, develop, teach, train, demonstrate, and present on a variety of topics and eras using both first- and third-person interpretive techniques at sites including Henricus Historical Park, Historic Castlewood, Historic Eppington, and Historic Point of Rocks, among others. An emphasis will be in teaching school-aged children visiting sites on school field trips. Other duties include site improvement and maintenance projects, historical research and analysis, animal care, agricultural work, among others. In addition, the living history Historical Interpreter II will be expected to develop programs and assist in educating and training fellow employees on topics and techniques. The specialist interpreter will work directly with visitors of all ages, volunteers, and other internal and external interpreters. Works as needed on weekends for special events and programs. Performs other work as required.
Shift
Wednesday - Sunday; shift varies to include some evenings and holidays.
