Position Title: Program Manager

Position Summary

The Program Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing the public programs, educational initiatives, and interpretive experiences of the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden. Working under the direction of the Museum Manager, this position ensures that programming reflects the museum’s mission to interpret over two centuries of Alexandria and American history.

 

The Program Manager is responsible for opening and closing the museum in accordance with the site’s security procedures; recruiting, training, and maintaining the museum’s volunteers; providing all tours in the absence of a docent; developing and conducting educational programs and special events; and coordination of visitor services and group tours.

 

Schedule

The Program Manager works at the museum Wednesday through Sunday. Scheduling flexibility is required. Candidates must be available to assist or run programs, some of which take place in the evening and on weekends.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the creation, coordination, and evaluation of mission-aligned programs and events that foster relevant and engaging experiences for diverse audiences across age groups. This includes continuing existing tours, talks, and special programs, as well as implementing new ones. Staffing events as needed, including evening events and rentals.
  • Develop, coordinate, and expand K-12 and home-school educational tours and programs that align with curriculum standards and support meaningful engagement with Lee-Fendall’s collections, history, and mission.
  • Coordinate and oversee volunteers and interns, and maintain the volunteer schedule. Oversee volunteer recruitment and training. Provide all tours in the absence of a docent.
  • Collaborate with the Museum Manager on the development and implementation of exhibitions that enhance the museum’s historical interpretation and support its educational mission
  • Oversee the planning, scheduling, and delivery of group tours, maintaining consistent interpretive standards and a positive visitor experience.
  • Work with the Museum Manager to create engaging social media content and coordinate a strategic social media calendar that enhances public outreach and audience engagement.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of marketing, fundraising, and outreach efforts. Collaborate with the Museum Manager to enhance visibility and support institutional goals.
  • Maintain a clean museum, including all office spaces, display areas, and lecture rooms. Stock cleaning supplies, as needed. Assist with routine maintenance of the museum and garden.
  • Assist the Museum Manager with collections-related activities, including handling and relocating objects, organizing storage areas, and maintaining accurate collection records in the database, as needed.

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Two or more years of museum education and public programming experience.
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Ability to problem-solve, work independently, and be capable of excellence in a team-oriented culture.
  • Ability to communicate to various constituents of the museum environment with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous museum object handling experience is preferred. Accuracy and meticulous attention to detail; ability to handle fragile collections in keeping within the museum’s Collections Management Policy.
  • Strong computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Google Drive, and museum database programs (CatalogIt or similar); ability to learn new computer applications.
  • Good organization and interpersonal skills; flexibility, punctuality, resourcefulness; ability to work effectively in both a team structure and independently under deadlines.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of working and transporting materials for events, programs, or collections-related activities. Must be able to reach and work above the shoulders, climb step-ladders and non-standard chairs; must be able to routinely handle objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills.
  • Knowledge of Museum Professional policies, issues, and strategies.

 

Salary: $42,000 - $45,000/year, depending on relevant experience.
