Part-time Museum Educator

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has an opportunity for a creative and enthusiastic part-time Lead Educator to provide outstanding visitor experiences for guests at the MSV. Through gallery interactions, guided student and adult tours, facilitated discussion, family and adult programs, special events and outreach activities, a Lead Educator engages the public in ongoing learning and exploration. Lead Educators ensure that tours are conducted in a consistent educational and professional manner that reflects the mission of the Museum. Secondary responsibilities include providing guests with directions, information, and assistance regarding the site with exceptional hospitality in a friendly, attentive manner.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and visitors of all ages at all levels
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Ability to collaborate with a strong team of employees and volunteers to achieve visitor service goals
  • Proven interest in and/or knowledge of history, decorative arts, and fine arts
  • Commitment to providing excellence in interpretation of the site to the public is paramount
  • Prior teaching experience in a formal or informal setting preferred
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity to the care necessary for the museum collection, house, and gardens
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR recommended
  • The position requires standing for up to four hours at a time, walking up to five miles in a row (including outdoors), and lifting up to 30 pounds.

 

Duties & Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Serve as the lead educator, interpreter, and guide campus-wide (galleries building, MSV gardens and Glen Burnie House, the Trails at the MSV, and Rose Hill Park) for:
    • student and adult groups
    • community programs
    • special events
    • outreach (off site) programs and events, and
    • individual visitors of all ages.
  • Assist visitors in discovering the many facets of the Museum by encouraging them to explore and learn.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization by providing a friendly, helpful and welcoming atmosphere through engaging interactions, thorough knowledge of all our programs, and an enthusiasm for our institution. 
  • Serve as host/interpreter in the Glen Burnie House.
  • Provide accurate information to guests about the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, gardens, trails, and programs in an interactive manner
  • Have working knowledge of museum guidelines, policies, and emergency procedures.
  • Administer policies and procedures relative to daily visitor access to the Museum. 
  • Attend Lead Educator meetings and other training sessions as requested.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

This is a part-time hourly position with flexible work hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
