Position Overview:
Preservation Virginia seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Chief Advancement Officer to lead its fundraising efforts and grow its major gift program. Founded in 1889, Preservation Virginia is the nation’s first statewide preservation association and manages six historic sites open to the public while performing extensive community engagement efforts. The Chief Advancement Officer will identify and develop fundraising strategies to expand philanthropic efforts through individual major gifts, a growing membership program, grants, and planned giving. The candidate will supervise the Development Office of four in Richmond while helping coordinate fundraising efforts at its various historic sites, including projects at Historic Jamestowne, Bacon’s Castle, Cape Henry Lighthouse, Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown, the John Marshall House, and Smith’s Fort. The candidate will work closely with the President & CEO and CFO of Preservation Virginia, and in coordination with management staff.
Skills required include:
Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated success in a broad range of development programs including major gifts, membership programs, planned giving, and grant-writing; excellent communication and writing skills; management of staff and volunteers; attention to detail; a passion for local history and historic preservation efforts. Preference will be given to those with experience in both public and private sector funding, capital campaigns, and national donor constituencies.
Duties of the position include:
- Identifying, cultivating, and soliciting fund-raised support by developing and maintaining relationships with individuals, foundations, corporations, and public agencies that produce support for the organization and its programs and services
- Managing and expanding the organization's planned giving initiative,
- Working with Development staff, research and review grant opportunities to support specific aspects of operations and programs
- Formulating fundraising strategies to ensure proper acknowledgment, recognition, and stewardship of donors on all levels
- Managing the planning and executing special and cultivation events
- Securing sponsorship and maintaining corporate relationships to underwrite those events
- Evaluating the effectiveness of development programs by conducting comparative analysis for the Board of Trustees
- Assisting in the preparation of the annual budget and goal evaluation
- Participating in professional development and community outreach
- Working closely with historic site managers to share fundraising strategies and maintain a culture of philanthropy
- And other activities as needed or assigned.
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation is commensurate with experience. Salary range is $110,000-$120,000 based on experience. Position offers paid leave, health, dental, and retirement plan benefits.
Schedule:
The position is full-time generally Monday - Friday with evening or weekend time required as needed for special programs and events. Travel required, as constituency includes supporters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
