Organization Overview

We are one of two programs of the George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Association, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. The other program is Scholarships. Our location is within the original library of the George Washington Carver Regional High School in Rapidan, the first and only secondary school built specifically for minority children from five locales: the counties of Culpeper, Rappahannock, Orange, and Madison, and the Town of Culpeper. The school opened in 1948 and closed at the end of public school segregation in our area. The museum was organized in August 2016, followed by one year of traveling exhibits detailing U. S. Colored Troops born in our targeted counties. Our Opening exhibit was for alumni only in October, 2018, Journey: The Class of 1949, followed by a grand opening in February, 2019 with an exhibit titled, Origins. Since that time, we have researched, produced and exhibited more than 40 in-museum, virtual, and traveling exhibits. We are now producing our own documentary, "Citizens All: The Story of the George Washington Carver Regional High School." Our values are citizenship, stewardship, and partnership. We are a full volunteer organization, including our curator.
