Georgetown Heritage – Director of Development

Georgetown Heritage is seeking an experienced and energetic fundraising professional to serve as its director of development. As an official Friends Group of the National Park Service (NPS), Georgetown Heritage is working to preserve, revitalize, and interpret NPS assets in the Georgetown neighborhood into inviting, inspiring and inclusive destinations. In partnership with NPS, Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) and the District of Columbia, Georgetown Heritage is actively working to enrich the visitor experience along a one-mile section of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and one-third-mile segment of Rock Creek Park within Georgetown. To complete the proposed project enhancements, will require both public and private resources. The director of development will play a leading role in raising private funds for this project through a planned fundraising campaign and developing Georgetown Heritage’s annual fundraising program.

Position Summary

The Director of Development will report directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for creating, implementing and managing all of Georgetown Heritage’s fundraising and donor relationship activities. Working with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the position will manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors and will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these individuals, corporations and foundations. The successful candidate will be expected to spend time meeting and communicating with key individuals and organizations, and identify potential partners whose interests align with Georgetown Heritage’s mission. The position will also be responsible for overseeing the management and execution of a campaign effort, working in close conjunction with the Executive Director, board, volunteers and campaign counsel. This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute the annual development plan for Georgetown Heritage’s fundraising activities to support the short- and long-term philanthropic needs of the organization.
  • Successfully manage a portfolio of campaign and annual fund donors and prospects (individuals, corporations and foundations) and ensure that the external cultivation and stewardship of donors is adequate to meet or exceed goals.
  • Develop specific strategies to continually identify, cultivate, and solicit individuals and organizations capable of making major gifts to the organization.
  • Prepare fundraising proposals, working closely with the Executive Director and other members of the board and staff.
  • Responsible for overseeing launch and execution of a campaign effort, working in close conjunction with campaign counsel, Executive Director, volunteers and partner organizations.
  • Assist with crafting a compelling case for support.
  • Responsible for successful execution of planned development activities to achieve stated revenue goals; includes working with the Executive Director, board, committee members, volunteers and others as appropriate.
  • Ensure that accurate and thorough records are maintained in the database, including contact reports, giving history, biographical data, etc.
  • Support Executive Director with other duties as assigned to advance the understanding, cause, mission and the support of Georgetown Heritage.


                The successful applicant will have the following qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience and documented success in fundraising and development.
  • Experience working with major donors. Campaign experience is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills used with a variety of constituencies.
  • Computer skills, particularly in word processing and record-keeping (Microsoft Word and Excel), fundraising software Salesforce and familiar with internet communication and search tools.
  • Be able to take initiative and work independently, with attention to detail and ability to work autonomously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Be able to think strategically and creatively about opportunities to raise funds, manage competing priorities, and work well with colleagues.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Georgetown Heritage’s mission and priorities, such as conservation, historic preservation and interpretation of National Park Service assets in Georgetown.



Salary & Benefits

$90,000 to $110,000 based upon experience plus benefits package.
