General Responsibilities:

The Curator of Collections is responsible for the care, documentation, acquisitions, and conservation of Preservation Virginia’s fine and decorative arts collection. The position assists in developing storylines, labeling, and object content for interpretive exhibitions. The curator of collections researches and shares findings relating to historic interiors and collections, resulting in presentations, publications, and programs. Reports to the Director of Museum Operations.

 

Qualifications:

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in decorative arts, history, or a closely related field; a master’s degree is preferred. The candidate must have a strong understanding of best practices in collections management. They should have familiarity with and the ability to interpret histories of enslavement. Deep knowledge of material culture, especially 17th-19th century southern interiors, is critical. A history of publications and presentations is a plus—the ability to conduct genealogy and research on individuals associated with sites, both free and enslaved.

 

General Description:

  • Cares for, researches, and develops the Preservation Virginia fine and decorative arts collection; assumes responsibility for exhibitions, research, publications, acquisitions, and donor stewardship related to the collection. Works collaboratively with the Education Manager and site coordinators to use the collection for interpretive programs and tours.
  • Ensures that objects in Preservation Virginia’s collection are appropriately documented, including developing written and photographic data to create a full catalog record in paper and digital forms
  • Assists with documentation, including the development of appropriate written and photographic data, for historic interior projects
  • Maintains collections on display and in storage
  • Establishes conservation priorities, works with the development department on grants and funding needs, executes conservation treatment requests, assists with setting priorities, and participates in discussions about proposed treatments
  • Researches and shares findings relating to Preservation Virginia collections, historic interiors, and the household accessories collections through publications, presentations, and social media
  • Researches the lives of enslaved and free occupants of the Preservation Virginia historic sites to improve the depth and integrity of interpretation
  • Trains site coordinators and interpreters in coordination with Director of Museum Operations and Preservation Services Project Manager in best practices for collections management
  • Develops professional relationships with current and potential donors to further the development of funding for Preservation Virginia’s collection and interpretation
  • Develops professional relationships with colleagues at other institutions and related fields to keep abreast of current scholarship
  • Supervises the work of interns and volunteers as required
  • Undertakes other tasks and assignments as appropriate

 

Salary:

The position is a full-time, salaried position. Salary range $45-50,000
