About George Washington's Mount Vernon
Founded in 1858, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (MVLA) owns and maintains Mount Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington. Through robust education and outreach programs, MVLA expands awareness about the life of George Washington and the world he lived in. MVLA broadens each guest's understanding of the Washingtons through research, interpretation, and public education. Today, Mount Vernon includes the mansion, museum, research library, stunning gardens, a working farm, gristmill, distillery, retail shops, full-service restaurant, and more.

The Role:
Mount Vernon’s Creative Director oversees the direction of all graphic productions, branding, and interactive development across the entire estate. The role oversees our internal graphic design team and maintains and builds relationships with external creative teams.

What You'll Do:
  • Brand Strategy and Visual Communications: Directs, plans and implements brand strategies, overall concepts and creative work for all branding and communications. This includes, but is not limited to marketing collateral, advertising, signage, web, digital, video, social media, museum exhibits and retail.
  • Leads brand assessment, refresh, and implementation internally and externally.
  • Directs and evaluates the work of Museum staff and contractors to effectively translate the Museum's brand into effective on-brand visual communication.
  • Acts as the final sign off on design, copy, and UX work for all projects.
  • Maintain and create an inclusive creative process that inspires the best ideas and creative work from across departments.
  • Directs the creative team, optimizes and tracks projects for the estate including assigning projects to staff or freelancers, evaluating their work, ensuring smooth workflow, quality of work and refining production systems to ensure projects are delivered on time.
  • Help identify, hire, and retain designers, copywriters, project managers, and freelancers, as needed.
  • Facilitates information flow between Creative team and other departments.
  • Photography and Digital Archives: Oversees photography production to ensure that Mount Vernon’s digital archive of images are on-brand and accessible for use in print, digital, environmental, media/PR and curatorial needs. Provides direction for photographic imagery: including assets for exhibits, advertising campaigns, marketing collateral (print and digital), digital initiatives, and other imagery needs. Builds a library of assets that can be monetized through Museum store products and other licensing channels.
  • Website & Digital Properties: Interfaces with all departments (Marketing, Programs, Education, Collections, Development, Guest Relations, etc.) to design website pages and online presence. Provides creative direction and design for the websites, on-site digital and social media.
  • Digital Design: Collaborates across the museum to design and produce digital content aimed at engaging visitors, expand access to our world-class collection, generate participation and revenue, and connect George Washington’s Mount Vernon with a broader audience nationally, and internationally.
  • Oversee and cultivate Mount Vernon’s Digital ecosystem, including the website, mobile platforms, in-gallery applications. Develop new strategies to connect Mount Vernon visitors with relevant content where ever they are. At home, on the go, or on-site.
  • Push innovation and professional growth: Stay on top of developments in the field, industry, and culture.

Candidate must have:
  • Ability to translate business objectives into visual assets.
  • Strong ability to lead, manage and delegate a high volume of projects and develop production schedules to ensure deliverables meet deadlines.
  • A strong understanding of brand values and how to translate them into clear, engaging, and on-brand designs.
  • Solid knowledge of design principles and best practices across digital and print.
  • Knowledge of typography, layout, hierarchy, and branding.
  • Aptitude for continuous learning to stay on top of new design trends and technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across all levels – managers, department heads, c-suite, and board members.
  • Ability to creatively think about and approach problems and assigned projects.
  • Strong presentation skills
  • 7-10 years of multi-disciplinary graphic design experience. With at least 5 years in a managing role for cross-functional groups
  • B.A./B.S./MFA degree in Graphic Design or a related field; or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of color theory, print and digital color palettes, and Pantone color matching.
  • Knowledge of print production.
Nice to Haves
  • Familiarity with Asana, Tandem Vault, Lucid Press, and Tessitura
  • Interest or experience in museum exhibition designs
  • Interest or experience in photography or video production
  • Interest in American history
Work at Mount Vernon
The work schedule is 40 hours a week, on-site, Monday-Friday. The start and end times of the workday are semi-flexible but must be available between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mount Vernon is open 365 days a year. Some evening events or holiday work is required but not regularly.

This position is a part of the Media & Communications department which includes marketing, strategic partnerships, design, and public affairs.
