Organizational Objective / Goal

The mission of Gari Melchers Home and Studio is to display to the public on a regular basis the art works and furnishings that make up the Belmont collections; to maintain and preserve the collections and physical facilities of the estate in order that they will be available to the public for use by this and future generations; and to interpret the collections in a manner that will serve local educational institutions and the general public as a resource for studying the full range of works of a major American artist together with the tools of his trade in the locale in which he worked. The purpose of Gari Melchers Home and Studio is also to serve as an art center for the people of the Fredericksburg area.

General Description of Position

Under supervision of the Executive Director of University Museums, oversees daily operations of Gari Melchers Home and Studio. Candidate chosen will be in provisional status while orienting with the incumbent Assistant Director and Curator, who will retire in the fall of 2023.

Required KSAs / Competencies / Qualifications to successfully perform their work

Knowledge of best professional practices for care and interpretation of artifact and fine art collections. Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with a diverse group of people that may include visitors, faculty, students, and staff. Knowledge of European and American art history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Preferred KSA's / Competencies / Qualifications to successfully perform the work
Knowledge of Gari Melchers’ life and career in context of European and American artists of his era. Knowledge of museum management within a higher education environment.

Required Education

MA in Art History, MFA, or equivalent degree.
Required Experience
10+ years work in museums. Supervision of full and/or part-time employees. Management of operating budgets.
Preferred Education
PhD or equivalent degree.
Preferred Experience
Work in a higher education environment.
