The Virginia Holocaust Museum seeks a dedicated Assistant Curator to support the management, preservation, and accessibility of its extensive collection. This role involves the care of thousands of historically significant artifacts and documents, including hundreds of individual collections from Holocaust and modern genocide survivors.
Essential Responsibilities
- Appraise, arrange, and describe collection materials in accordance with professional standards (DACS, EAD, Dublin Core).
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date collection inventories, including regular spot-checks and reconciliation of archives and records.
- Ensure proper care, storage, and preservation of collection items in accordance with museum best practices.
- Evaluate and coordinate the re-housing and stabilization of collection materials.
- Facilitate access to collections for researchers, students, and the public by:
- Providing digital scans of images and documents.
- Arranging materials for public programs.
- Coordinating loans to other institutions.
- Implement and improve procedures for managing archival collections using the museum’s current cataloging system.
- Collaborate with the Director of Collections to develop and implement:
- Collections management policies.
- Archival procedures.
- A departmental procedures manual.
- Preservation and strategic goals.
- Schedule and oversee the maintenance of permanent exhibits.
- Coordinate with external institutions on disaster preparedness planning.
- Administer the scheduling and logistics of the museum’s traveling exhibitions.
- Assist in the design and development of new temporary exhibitions.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Museum Studies or MLS/MLIS preferred, or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with 1–2 years of experience in museum collections or archival work.
Compensation
- Starting salary is $40,000
