Sky Meadows State Park is seeking a highly motivated Education Support Specialist I (Park Interpreter-Naturalist) to provide meaningful educational opportunities and experiences for park guests by interpreting the significance of the park's natural resources, and opportunities for rest and rejuvenation.
The Education Support Specialist is responsible for researching, developing and conducting formal and informal interpretive and education-based programs, as well as for researching and writing interpretive media such as waysides and brochures. The position assists in maintaining knowledge and records of the park’s natural resources, coordinates volunteers for interpretive programs, and seeks/fosters partnerships for interpretive programming, workshops and lectures, and assists in maintaining the park’s self-guided interpretive opportunities. Position may also include providing first point of contact for visitors at the Visitor Center, including processing sales in Visitor Center Gift Shop, as well as other duties as assigned. The Education Support Specialist may be required to perform other park-related duties during emergencies or on a nonrecurring basis. Position requires work on weekends, holidays and some evenings. This is a year-round, part-time position, limited to 1476 hours from May through April.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicant must have the ability to organize and conduct nature-based programs for all ages; ability to effectively communicate with very diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing; knowledge of Virginia natural resources. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Resource Management, Parks and Recreation or similar subjects. Basic knowledge of agriculture and local history topics a bonus. Experience in planning and conducting educational programs and supervision of employees is desired
