ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts is a project of the Virginia Association of Museums. This public outreach campaign for collections care was launched in 2011 with support from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). VAM is proud of the success of the Top 10 program. Several other states, including Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Colorado, and North Carolina have replicated this exciting public outreach program.
Following four successful years of building awareness for over 90 organizations and their artifacts located across Virginia and DC, the Top 10 has resulted in many positive outcomes. For example, donors have come forth to assist with conservation support, new volunteers have volunteered their efforts towards conservation, and participating museums have won grants to help support conservation and care of artifacts. The list of "Top 10" honorees was selected by an independent review panel of collections and conservation experts from the Library of Virginia, Preservation Virginia, Virginia Conservation Association, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, as well as an independent conservator. The "People's Choice Award" goes to the artifact that collects the most votes during the public voting component of the campaign. Learn more by viewing the video below.
