K-12 Education

VAM recognizes that Virginia museums are important resources to teachers across the Commonwealth. We want to help ensure that all Virginia teachers know about and have access to the educational materials developed by museum educators, and to help Virginia museums to better reach those teachers and share all that they have to offer.  Watch this space for more information about our growing partnership with Virginia Department of Education, and for more resources to help you.

American Evolution Stories Website

We encourage the Virginia museum community to visit the newly launched American Evolution Stories website and start sharing your unique stories that help highlight the 400th anniversary of key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today.
Use the following guides to get started!
  • An American Evolution Stories guide to help you get familiar with how the platform works, and how to upload stories AE Stories Guide
  • An American Evolution Stories 1-pager that summarizes the story submission process, highlights your keys to success and includes contact information One Pager

Standards of Learning Documents

Virginia Department of Education creates and oversees the Standards of Learning (SOL) and Curriculum Framework that comprise the history and social science content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn.

Museums are encouraged to visit the Virginia Department of Education website for complete details on the K-12 curriculum requirements in order to help guide development of program content that will meet SOL requirements and attract the attention of teachers, families, and students.
