The Senior Director of the Research Library is a collaborative community builder responsible for the vision, leadership and overall management of library services, programs, and collections, to include management of planning, budgeting, and staffing in support of the information needs of scholars, educators, the general public, and staff. The senior director fosters critical scholarship in reference to Virginia's history while also developing new and existing academic and public programs, as well as growing the library's collection of printed material. This position builds and maintains a community of scholars through a program of long- and short-term fellowships to provide support to researchers in all fields who show a demonstrated need to use the collections for their projects. The senior director also oversees the execution of scholarly print and digital publications and associated programming including conferences, workshops, public lectures, family, and adult programming.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Research Library Responsibilities

  • Lead the library staff in promoting and providing broad access to collections through daily general operations
  • Administer fellowship programs including chairing of review committees, management of budgets, and oversight of colloquia
  • Collaborate with the Vice President for Collections & Exhibitions to foster relationships with the academic community to encourage the use of collections in scholarly activities
  • Foster scholarship and education in the history of Virginia to a variety of audiences through innovative academic and public programs
  • Develop and present special programs and instructional activities to extend awareness of library resources and services

Collection Responsibilities

  • Build the library's printed material collections through the identification, appraisal, and acquisition of appropriate items including books, rare books, serials, imprints, sheet music, broadsides, and other published materials
  • Support the physical management, care, and preservation of the library's print collections

Publications Management and Administration

  • Oversee production of VMHC scholarly print and digital publications, including the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography
  • Collaborate with the Publications Managing Editor to select content for publications and develop associated programming including lectures, classes, and symposia
  • Contribute to and support the generation of new content and scholarship related to Virginia history for various internal and external uses by the VMHC, including member publications, exhibitions, web and social media platforms, and guest programming

Project Management and Administration

  • Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and mission activities of the library
  • Assist with the development of comprehensive strategies for philanthropy and other forms of support for library activities
  • Lead and serve on cross-functional teams and committees
  • Participate in institutional priority setting and strategic and annual business planning
  • Direct and supervise library activities including priority setting, coaching, and performance management
  • Develop and steward relationships with the academic community in partnership with VMHC staff and trustees
  • Contribute to the development, writing, implementation, and reporting of grants; participate in the development of corporate and other partnership proposals
  • Keep abreast of developments in the fields of Virginia historical scholarship, library science, archival studies, museums; stay current with professional best practices
  • Engage in public outreach in the form of lectures, tours, research assistance and media appearances and serve as a spokesperson for the VMHC with the public and media

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:

  • Extensive knowledge of archival and library functions and practices with demonstrated ability to administer the activities of a research library
  • Broad knowledge of current trends in curatorship
  • Extensive knowledge of Virginia and U.S. history and current trends in scholarship
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, coach and motivate direct reports and other staff teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with researchers, scholars, press, external and internal stakeholders

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Library Science, History or related field; PhD preferred
  • Five years leadership experience required
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity and creativity in history or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience with collections research, development and documentation associated with published materials
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in mission activities, the workplace, and the community
