Gunston Hall is pleased to announce an opening for a part-time school and youth programs coordinator at an unparalleled historic site on scenic Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia.
We are seeking candidates who are people-oriented, lovehis tory, and are eager to share Gunston Hall’s story with visitors. Gunston Hall’s mission calls upon us to stimulate the continuing public exploration of democratic ideals as first presented by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.
The school and youth programs coordinator reports to the director of education and guest experiences. The school and youth programs coordinator works collaboratively with all of the paid and unpaid staff, maintaining a particularly close relationship with the education, collections, and archaeology staff, as well as the volunteer docent corps.
The school and youth programs coordinator is responsible for
the smooth running of the museum’s school tours;
developing a positive and productive relationship with a corps of approximately 60 volunteer docents;
maintaining high standards for content and teaching methods for school tours;
ensuring that teachers receive timely, professional communications from Gunston Hall;
coordinating logistics and content for programs such as “Just for Educators,” a professional development workshop for teachers;
serving as the lead staff member for the Gunston Hall Writing Competition (4th grade) and the Gunston Hall Writing Workshop (4th and 5th grades);
developing new educational materials and youth programs;
contributing to planning and running of public programs.
The ideal candidate will be friendly, interested in history, solution-oriented, detailoriented, and committed to presenting Gunston Hall in the best possible light to teachers, students, program attendees, museum visitors, and other members of the general public.
Minimum requirements are
a bachelor’s degree in history, education, museum studies, public history, or a related field;
experience in teaching in either formal or informal learning settings;
excellent customer service skills;
exemplary communication skills;
demonstrated knowledge of basic office procedures;
demonstrated knowledge of computers, telephone systems, audio-visual equipment, and cash registers;
demonstrated ability to maintain an electronic calendar in order to schedule events;
demonstrated ability to multi-task;
demonstrated ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
In addition, to qualify for this position, candidates must be available to help with periodic weekend and evening events. This is an hourly (wage) position. It does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.
