The City of Virginia Beach Department of Aquarium, Historic Houses, and Museums invites your interest in the position of School and Youth Program Educator for the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.
The School and Youth Program Educator will conduct standards-based programs for school and extra-curricular groups of youth visiting the Aquarium; groups may include youth from public and private schools, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and other organizations. Engage and educate school and youth groups through the use of artifacts, live animals, and hands-on activities in programs including on-site school programs, Boy and Girl Scout workshops, overnight programs and summer day camps. Conduct scheduled education programs based on standards of learning or scout badge requirements with hands-on, inquiry-based learning objectives, for preschool to college students and/or adults, with group size ranging from 10 - 200 participants in outdoor and indoor settings. Use live animals to enhance school and youth programming, which involves handling invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. Supervise part-time educators, interns and volunteers and provide training for school and youth programming. Assist with developing programs including audio-visuals, hands-on stations and activities, interactive discussions, written materials, and in the field experiences.  Communicate effectively and professionally with participants of all ages, Aquarium staff and volunteers.  Assist with gathering school and youth group feedback on program experience.  Deliver extraordinary customer service to school and youth groups and other guests.  Assist gallery educators with guest experience needs and programs.  Must be able to work flexible schedule that will include weekends, evenings and overnights and schedule may change weekly based on the needs of groups. Serve as educator on duty on selected weekends, evenings and overnight events.  Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in marine science, education or related subject; experience conducting standards-based science programs in formal or informal education settings; demonstrated ability to use creative skills to create engaging, hands-on, interactive programs, lessons and activities; experience working with Boy and Girl Scouts or similar organization; experience supervising staff and volunteers; experience providing training for staff and volunteers, experience providing customer service in a similar setting; and experience handling animals in a program or presentation setting.
This position is classified as a Program Educator I on the City’s pay plan.  The salary range is $29,203.20 - $43,326.40 The City offers an excellent benefits package with includes health, dental, and life insurance; retirement and savings plans; holidays, paid time off; as well as access to the Beach Municipal Federal Credit Union, a non-profit service agency which is owned and operated exclusively for City employees and their dependents.
