The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a qualified individual to fill the full-time position of Registration Assistant.

The Registration Assistant will carry out all day-to-day Registration functions related to completion of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to catalog and digitize 5,785 photographs in the permanent collection, in coordination with a grant project Assistant Photographer. The Registration Assistants role is to:

Ensure the physical well-being of the objects during the process (preparation, movement, photography, re-housing)

Coordinate and oversee the work flow and schedule

Examine and assess each work’s condition, in coordination with Conservation staff

Coordinate review of all catalog information with Curatorial staff

NOTE: This position is grant funded for 18 months and continued employment is subject to continuation of funds.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of 1 year of experience in the field of museum registration

Significant knowledge of studio art, art history, conservation techniques, and collections management processes

Excellent computer skills including significant experience with The Museum System (TMS) collections management software system

Moderate experience working with artwork in a museum environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in art history, museum studies, art education, conservation and/or studio art

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to identify media and to make storage housings for photographic works of art
Second language desirable

Special Requirements
Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.

All staff (state and foundation), volunteers, and contractors at VMFA must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
COVID-19 Testing (September 24 – October 31, 2021)
Weekly testing for COVID-19 required for all staff that are not fully vaccinated as mandated by Executive Directive 18.
Effective November 1, all VMFA staff must be fully vaccinated, and weekly testing will no longer be conducted (except for cases of approved medical and religious accommodation).
