The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a dynamic individual to coordinate the Volunteer Program at the Science Museum of Virginia. The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit, train, evaluate, support and recognize the Museum’s volunteer corps which includes ongoing and episodic volunteers, interns and corporate volunteers, ensuring volunteers are engaged and representative of the Museum’s broader community, and maximizes total staff effectiveness in meeting the agency’s goals and objectives.
This position performs a variety of duties, including scheduling and conducting volunteer interviews, checking references, managing volunteer staffing and tracking attendance; maintaining volunteer files and records, managing volunteers at Museum events, planning, scheduling and conducting new volunteer orientations and training. This position also creates and distributes volunteer special event communications and produces the volunteer quarterly e-newsletter.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Must be able to work during evening Museum events, some weekends and holidays.
Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1,500 hours in a 12 month period. No state benefits are provided.
Desirable candidates should exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of principles and practices of volunteer management; the ability to successfully work with people of all ages and backgrounds in an educational environment; the ability to be a self-starter and work successfully with little supervision; the ability to plan, organize and meet established deadlines; skill in the operation of office equipment; proficiency with word processing, G-Suite spreadsheet, database, and presentation software applications; superb interpersonal skills; the ability to maintain confidentiality, work as a team member; the ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies; and strategic planning ability to improve, strengthen and grow the Museum Volunteer Program.
Volunteer management or Human Resources management experience. Experience working in informal education/museum setting preferred. Knowledge of Volgistics Software a plus.
The selected candidate must pass a criminal background check.
