Black History Museum & Cultural Center - Richmond, VA


The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia seeks a self-motivated, highly
organized, detail-oriented, and experienced Museum Curator to lead the development,
organization, and design of an exhibition highlighting the 40th anniversary of the museum
focusing on African American history, Virginia history, and Historic Jackson Ward and also
updating the museum’s permanent exhibition to ensure they are equally informative and
complementary of the other. During this project period the Museum Curator will be
responsible for the overall organization and management of the BHMVA collections
including collection development and acquisitions, database management, and exhibition
research, design, and implementation.

The ideal candidate will have experience with Africann American history, exhibitions about African American history, working in a museum or
similar setting, and curating successful exhibitions. The position reports directly to the Executive Director and works with all BHMVA team members to ensure a collaborative and coordinated anniversary exhibition.

This position is funded to curate an anniversary exhibition to open in January 2022 along with permanent exhibition upgrades in 2021 and
2022. Compensation is based on these projects with future engagement dependent upon continued funding support.


Duties and Responsibilities
• Coordinates the planning, design, and installation of exhibitions
• Develops and organizes new collections to expand and improve museum’s overall
historic value
• Conducts extensive research, negotiates prices on and purchases items such as artifacts,
sculptures, statues, and paintings that can add value to the collection
• Creates, maintains, records and catalogs existing permanent exhibition and new
acquisitions
• Conducts research, compiles, and prepares written information about catalogs and
publishes it on the institution's website
• Networks and collaborates with historians, other history organizations,
museums/institutions, and essential community agencies
• Ensures collections are properly preserved and insured
• Updates websites to explain new attractions
• Assists in raising funds and obtaining grants to expand collection, update facilities, or
support research efforts
• Ensures that all museums' activities; exhibits, receptions and tours are documented -
photographed and/or video recorded
• Assumes accountability for the safety of their exhibition components
• Collaborates with BHMVA team members to present programming, train docents, and
communicate with publications
• Participates effectively on teams with special attention to priorities, budget, and
deadlines
• Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other office programs
• Ability and desire to work with diverse populations and communities

Preferred Qualifications/Experience
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major in history,
Black history, museum studies or related area
• Three to five years curatorial experience with Black history museums or historyrelated museums
• Superb project management and organizational skills
• Experience with museum databases and other applications
• Strong eye for detail and strong design instincts
• Solid negotiation, resource management, and people skills
• Exceptional research, verbal, and written communication skills
• Able to organize, present and communicate messages effectively through design
• Coordination of complex projects to completion
