Under direct supervision, this position assists in the management of the daily operations of the Isle of Wight County Museum and its affiliated historic sites. The curator is responsible for the development of museum exhibits as well as artifact conservation and preservation. Additionally, this position hosts and develops educational programs, lectures, special events and outreach events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

  • Performs Curatorial and Registraral duties for IOWC Museum, including, but not limited to care, storage, and exhibition of Museum's permanent and loaned collections. Also includes research and training. Registraral duties include preparing Deed of Gift and Loan forms, accessioning, cataloging, researching, data entry, etc.
  • Performs Curatorial and Registraral duties for Windsor Castle, Nike-Carrollton Park, Boykin’s Tavern, Fort Huger and Fort Boykin.
  • Research and exhibit work for the Isle of Wight County Museum, its affiliated historic sites, and other sites in Isle of Wight County to include archaeology, documentation, research, the development and design of displays, the acquisition of items for use, maintenance, and the breakdown of exhibits. This work includes web-based elements such as online exhibits, lectures, websites, social media, and video production.
  • Prepares and presents lectures, educational programs and outreach events to audiences of all ages including schools, homeschool organizations, universities, civic organizations, volunteers, and other departments.
  • Attends meetings and performs related committee work as required.
  • Receives and responds to research inquiries and prepares correspondence as necessary.
  • Meets with donors and lenders, prospective donors/lenders, media personnel, consultants, contractors, the general public and community groups to develop a positive image and to promote interest and support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, experience and training required
  • Must possess the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends
  • One (1) to three (3) years of related experience required
  • Must possess a working knowledge of museum operations
  • Must possess excellent attention to detail
  • Must have a good understanding of social media, technology, web design and video production
  • Must have experience giving lectures and hosting programs
  • Experience with PastPerfect or similar Museum Software preferred
  • Experience with retail operations preferred
  • Must be an excellent communicator – both oral and written
  • Must possess a customer service focused attitude
  • Proven problem-solving abilities
  • Must be able to communicate and work effectively with a team

 Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer background check and drug screen.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is a moderately sedentary role; however, some walking, filing, lifting, pushing, pulling, or climbing is required.  This would require the ability to lift/push/pull objects, climb ladders, bend, or stand as necessary.  The amount of weight to lift, push or pull would not exceed 50 pounds. Occasionally (less than 10% of the time), this role requires shoveling snow.

Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as keyboarding, filing, dialing/answering telephones.

Tasks are regularly performed with limited exposure to adverse environmental conditions; however occasionally, this position is required to shovel snow in small areas.
