Position: Museum Associate (Part-time) non-exempt
Department: Operations with Rotations through Education, Exhibitions, Development and Marketing
The Museum Associate position is an entry level position that requires a collaborative, dynamic group of peers that are instrumental in helping MOCA achieve its mission “to foster awareness, exploration, and understanding of the significant art of our time.” Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Museum Associate will gain experience in all aspects of the Museum including Education, Exhibitions, Visitor Services, Development and Marketing. While Visitor Services is a large portion of this position, Museum Associates will also rotate through all areas of the Museum on a bi-annual basis, gaining knowledge and experience in how MOCA operates. The ideal Museum Associate will be hands-on, collaborative, energetic and possess a positive, friendly personality.
Visitor Services Activities:
Meet and greet visitors; provide information on current and upcoming exhibitions and programming; gather visitor demographics; offer member benefit information. Complete daily recordkeeping and register reconciliation. Answer and manage phone calls. Assist with studio school registration and event ticket sales. Responsible for the physical appearance of the Welcome Desk and gift shop to include. Monitor galleries; lead and engage in conversations with visitors on works of art currently on exhibit. Ensures visitors do not touch works or bring food or drink into the galleries. Communicates concerns and/or suspicious activity to Museum Security.
Gallery Teaching Activities:
Lead groups of visitors (children and adults) through the galleries for pre-scheduled, inquiry-based tours (Ongoing training provided).
Works with the Development staff with various tasks including: MOCA’s annual Boardwalk Art Show, data collection and entry, updating MOCA’s Customer Relationship Management software NEON, and assisting with large appeal mailings and special event support. In addition, the Museum Associate will sit in on Development meetings to learn how MOCA creates and executes its development plan.
Works with the Education staff with various tasks including: research for future outreach programs, ARTlab and education events in conjunction with upcoming exhibits, assisting with MOCA’s Studio School, installation of Fleming Gallery and assisting with other MOCA
educational programs. In addition, the Museum Associate will sit in on Education meetings to learn how MOCA works from the exhibitions to create educational programming.
Works with the Exhibitions staff with various tasks including: research for upcoming exhibitions, working with the exhibition archive, preparations for upcoming exhibits (organize and gather supplies, prep space, etc.) and installation. In addition, the Museum Associate will sit in on Exhibition meetings to learn how MOCA plans, prepares and executes its exhibitions.
Works with the Marketing staff with various tasks including: updating community calendars, collaborating with the marketing team on social media, ensuring brand integrity, content development, copyediting, PR and advertising. In addition, the Museum Associate will sit in on Marketing meetings to learn about the strategies and rationale behind MOCA’s marketing.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. Interest or knowledge of museums, welcoming demeanor, dependable, punctual and a high level of communication skills. Enthusiastic, encouraging and open to personal interpretations of a work of art. Must have operational knowledge of Microsoft Office, general office equipment.
Requires constant standing and walking throughout the day, up to 8 hours with minimal rest breaks as well as constant engagement with the public. Must attend training sessions and be up to date on exhibition content and teaching strategies. Must be able to see, hear and communicate effectively with visitors. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted.
