Clarice & Robert H. Smith Educator


The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) in Middleburg, Virginia seeks an outgoing, dynamic communicator with experience in museum education to serve as the Clarice & Robert H. Smith Educator. The Clarice & Robert H. Smith Educator is responsible for overseeing public programs and the visitor experience for NSLM audiences of all ages. This position expands external partnerships to create an enriching visitor experience and establishes critical community outreach to educate and engage a variety of audiences. This position oversees the NSLM’s Visitor Services staff (5 part-time employees).


Major Responsibilities:

            Educator (60%)

  • Develops K-12 educational programs which meet Virginia’s SOL standards
  • Collaborates with NSLM staff to create robust calendar of public programs (about 100 per year)
  • Attends, oversees, and works the programs designed
  • Schedules public and private tours with NSLM staff
  • Identifies partner organizations to create and implement collaborative programming events that would enhance the role of the NSLM as an educational resource
  • Represents the NSLM where appropriate at various professional organization meetings/conferences, program partner meetings, and program-related community organizations
  • Works with the Membership & Events Manager to implement programs and the Marketing Manager to promote programs on social media
  • Develops and conducts regular tours for audiences that include adults and school groups
  • Identifies and books speakers for NSLM programming
  • Manages Education budget
  • Visitor Services Manager (35%)

    • Supervises, interviews, and trains Visitor Services staff
    • Develops a volunteer program to assist with events such as openings and outreach, as well as educational programs and docent-led tours
    • Provides support for large group tours & school group visits as needed
    • Oversees NSLM Gift Shop, including inventory of merchandise and weekly cash reporting/cash drawer reconciliation
    • Oversees and trains staff on POS system


    John H. Daniels Fellowship Advisor (5%)

    • Supervises the John H. Daniels Fellowship Program, including advertising for and reviewing all applications
    • Serves as staff liaison to the John H. Daniels Fellowship Committee of the NSLM Board of Directors
    • Collaborates with Librarians to facilitate research of John H. Daniels Fellows


    Work schedule: 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Additional hours will depend upon events scheduled. Rotating weekend work schedule (on average, 6 weekends per year).


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelors degree in history, art history, or a related subject area
    • Two years of experience providing educational support in a museum setting
    • Experience in classroom teaching or public speaking
    • Customer service and point of sale software experience
    • Excellent computer skills, including expertise in email, calendaring, word processing (preferably MS Word), and spreadsheet (preferably MS Excel) software


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Masters Degree in history, art history, museum studies, or a related subject area
    • Three or more years of experience designing educational programs in a museum setting
    • Experience managing a budget on a departmental level
    • Experience with social media and digital communication tools


    Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to perform the duties of the position, including the ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time, and to lift up to 30 pounds



    • $40,000 to $47,000 annual salary
    • 50% employer paid health insurance
