Salary: $15 hour; Part-time

John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center Museum in Spotsylvania, Virginia is seeking for a part-time Museum Administrator to perform the day-to-day operation of the museum. John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center Museum is a 501©3 organization whose mission is “to celebrate Spotsylvania by collaborating with like-minded individuals and organizations to collect, archive, share and facilitate learning about the interactive history of education, cultures and civic life of the county’s African American citizens.” The museum is located inside the former John J. Wright Consolidated School, 7565 Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania, Virginia. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. Admission is free.


Main duties:

· provides support with planning, design, fabrication, installation, update, and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions

· manages collections, including data input and maintenance of the PastPerfect database as well as artifact housing and conservation

· provides support with planning and coordination of museum events (lectures, concerts, workshops, etc.)

· works with various community partners to cultivate new audiences and engage diverse communities in creative ways

· cultivates and maintains contacts for marketing, advertising and public relations

· manages the museum’s social media accounts and develops effective marketing materials

· provides docent services for museum guests

· responds to routine inquiries and requests from within and outside the museum

· represents the museum at local, regional and national meetings

· supports administrative function for volunteers, researchers, and school staff

· plans and coordinates board meetings

· assists the board with strategic planning, grant writing, and programming oversight and direction

· manages and processes expenditures to stay within the allocated budget

· administers organizational paperwork (scheduling, correspondence, document preparation, etc.), including filing and photocopying

· works closely with the building manager to facilitate maintenance and repairs in the museum space

· performs administrative duties on daily basis, including the opening and closing of the museum

· other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in history, American studies, museum studies, historic preservation, or a related field 2. At least one year of museum work, either from full-time/part-time positions or volunteering experiences

3. Proficiency in PastPerfect and Microsoft Office

4. Strong customer service skills and a professional demeanor

5. Should be a team player but able to work independently with little supervision


Schedule: three days a week on a schedule agreed upon. Occasional evening and weekend hours.
