Summary:     

The Manager of Institutional Giving is responsible for actively cultivating financial support from private and public foundations, government agencies, and corporate entities to support the American Civil War Museum.  The Manager of Institutional Giving works with the Chief Advancement Officer and other museum staff to strategize, cultivate, and request support for multiple exhibitions, programs and educational projects.

The Manager of Institutional Giving is a key member of the Advancement team, which enhances the museum’s sustainability by inspiring audience engagement, increasing public awareness, and cultivating opportunities for financial giving. Through these efforts, the Advancement team broadens and deepens the museum’s audience and funding base for exploring the causes, course, and legacies of the American Civil War era. The team also enhances relationships between the Museum, its audiences, and its partners; and supports the desired impact of the Museum’s larger interpretive and strategic plans.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Grant Writing and Management

  • Serve as the primary writer on all grant proposals, letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports to foundations.
  • Manage the grant submission process, including the collection and synthesis of data, completion of proposals, tracking, reporting and corresponding with foundations and corporate donors.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the Museum’s strategic funding priorities.
  • Collaborate with development and Museum program staff to determine potentially grant fundable projects and programs.
  • Build and sustain a pipeline of prospective funders by researching and identifying new grant prospects.
  • Ensure compliance with all grant reporting requirements.  

Institutional Giving Stewardship and Solicitation

  • Research and identify corporate and foundation prospects and opportunities.
  • Expand the institutional giving program to encompass multiple revenue streams including: sponsorships, corporate gifts, and foundation solicitations.
  • Assist the Chief Advancement Officer in developing engagement strategies for current and potential institutional donors.
  • Support strategic donor outreach and communications, and maintain regular correspondence with key funding representatives.
  • Assist the Chief Advancement Officer in strategic planning and development of fundraising goals.
  • Assist the Marketing team in the development of engaging development collateral.

Data Management

  • Support the Museum’s development database in relation to institutional donors, and develop strategies for its use to ensure accurate data collection and meaningful reporting.
  • Share fundraising and grant impact data to empower informed decision making with respect to the Museum’s prospects and strategies.
  • Maintain records of all grant tracking and reporting.

Development Support

  • Coordinate with the Museum’s charity registration service to ensure that all necessary forms are filed with the states where the Museum solicits funding.
  • Report key metrics and strategies for institutional giving to the Board of Directors and management throughout the year.
  • Assist in planning and executing cultivation and stewardship events relating to foundation relations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years of fundraising/development experience
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills
  • Proficient with data and word processing systems such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Comfortable working with confidential financial information and working in a fast-paced environment where managing multiple tasks are the norm
  • Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and able to work independently

Desired Qualifications:

  • 2 years of fundraising/development experience specifically with institutional giving in a museum/cultural organization setting
  • Possess demonstrated experience writing compelling proposals to multiple audiences with demonstrated financial success
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and managing writing projects across teams and departments
  • Experience and proficiency with fundraising data management systems
  • Experience with grant management software solutions such as GrantHub
