Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field; experience as a living history interpreter or educator in a museum or historic site is required; teaching experience in the fields of history, anthropology, or elementary education preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of Anglo-Powhatan material culture, including tools, food, weapons, and clothing, etc. of both the English and Powhatan people preferred. Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to physically start and maintain fires, cut firewood, trees and brush, garden, and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be comfortable wearing a mix of reproduction 17th century Virginia Indian clothing and English clothing. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
Under the direction of the Henricus Historical Park Interpretation Supervisor, the living history interpreter will train in and research Virginia Indian history, primarily providing historically accurate costumed demonstrations to park visitors and off-site organizations using both first- and third-person interpretive techniques. Daily demonstrations will often include cooking, firing, canoe making, use of a bow and arrow, agricultural systems and tools, construction or repairs of structures, etc. and will also assist with costumed English colonial interpretation and demonstrations; train in all relevant school programs to assist in the education of approximately 21,000 school children per year. Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the Powhatan Indian village, including structures and agricultural areas. Perform other work as required.
Shift varies Monday - Friday; includes some evenings, weekends and holidays
