Job Listing: Historical Interpreter, Powhatan Indian
HENRICUS HISTORICAL PARK - CHESTERFIELD, VA
Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field; experience as an interpreter or educator in a museum or historic site or teaching experience in the fields of history, anthropology, or education preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of Virginia Indian history and culture with focus on the Powhatan Chiefdom, preferred. Outdoor work in all weather conditions required; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
Research and learn historical information of the indigenous Powhatan and colonial English of the 17th century; provide pre-planned demonstrations for school groups; teach pre-approved lesson plans in SOL and STEM-aligned programs, in period attire, to students grades K - 12. This includes both on-site and outreach programs. Teach adult programming; interpret history and culture of the Powhatan Chiefdom to public during regular open hours and for special events; learn, practice, demonstrate and interpret period crafts such as pottery making, hide tanning, basketry, etc.; assist in upkeep and care of the Powhatan Village of Arrahateck Interpretive Site. Provide programming and demonstrations for day camps and scout programs, teacher and school events and for family events. Perform other work as required.
28 hours/week; varies Monday - Friday between 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.; includes one weekend day per week and some holidays.
