The City of Virginia Beach Department of Aquarium, Historic Houses, and Museums invites your interest in the position of Historic Houses and Museums Engagement Specialist for the Virginia Beach History Museums.
The Historic Houses and Museums Engagement Specialist is classified as a Development Specialist on the City Pay Plan. This position is responsible for the development and management of the Virginia Beach Historic Houses and Museums' engagement strategy and associated activities, coordinating with staff and other stakeholders to provide a variety of programs, exhibits and events to advance the Department of Aquarium, Historic Houses, and Museums’ goals and strategic plan for the History Museums owned and operated by the City of Virginia Beach. Provide strategic leadership to the philanthropic efforts of the Virginia Beach Historic Houses Foundation; and secure financial support from a variety of other sources. Report to the Historic Houses and Museums Coordinator, and assist with the daily business operations of the museums.
Work functions and responsibilities include the following:
Serve as the City liaison to the Virginia Beach Historic Houses Foundation Board, which seeks to provide additional advocacy and fiscal support to the History Museums owned and operated by the City. Along with the Foundation Board and other public and private sector partners, work to ensure the long-term sustainability of the History Museums’ programs and exhibits.
Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating activities associated with the Historic Houses and Museums’ strategic plan, including but not limited to: alignment of initiatives, developing a comprehensive action plan based on the department’s strategic plan; and identifying opportunities for enhanced community partnerships.
Work closely with the programs staff to build connections in the community, including broadening and developing new museum audiences through engaging, inclusive, and participatory programming. Research historical issues to contribute to quality programming.
Provide event/program schedules and other information to program and marketing staff to support the marketing, design and delivery of cost-effective special events for the museums.
Write and/or coordinate the writing of, grant proposals and applications to ensure alignment with the museums’ strategic and financial goals; advise leadership and closely monitor the use of grant funds to ensure expenses are in line with grant award stipulations and provisions. Write accurate grant reports in line with grant requirements.
Assist the Historic Houses and Museums Coordinator with the daily business operations of the museums. Serve as a weekend supervisor on a rotating basis; respond to security alarm and emergency calls as needed; and approve staff schedules and leave requests in the Historic Houses and Museums Coordinator's absence.
Respond to customer requests for resources or information; serve as a speaker for events.
- Experience working with non-profit foundations and boards.
- Experience working with city officials, or local government officials, or elected officials.
- Proven track record of fundraising success.
- Experience writing and coordinating grants.
- Experience developing projects and or initiatives with achieving results on schedule and on budget.
- Experience evaluating programs.
- Must be highly motivated, collaborative, organized, and flexible.
The salary range is $45,552.00 - $67,600.00.
