These are non-exempt positions without benefits, scheduled to work up to approximately 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30). This position works varied shifts during VMFA’s public hours. VMFA is open 7 days a week from 10 am-5 pm with evening hours until 9 pm on Wednesday through Friday. New hires will work primarily in the special exhibition galleries. Our summer 2021 exhibition is The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture and the Sonic Impulse.
Gallery associates support the museum’s mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art by monitoring the galleries, assisting with crowd control, and informing visitors of the gallery guidelines. They provide excellent customer service to visitors by assisting them in the galleries with questions, directions, or other instructions; communicating museum closing times and ensuring galleries are clear before closing; and reporting incidents to supervisors in a timely manner. Gallery associates also coordinate with security staff in the event of an emergency and notify security staff of any safety or security issues as needed.
Ability to work effectively in both fast-paced and slow-paced environments.
Ability to communicate with the public in person; to use a radio for communication; to observe visitors in the galleries; to traverse the galleries for the majority of their shift with short breaks, with reasonable accommodations.
Experience in a customer service setting.
