The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest
comprehensive art museums in the United States. VMFA, which opened in 1936, is a
state agency and privately endowed educational institution. Its purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret art, and to encourage the study of the arts. Through the Office of Statewide Partnerships program, the museum offers curated exhibitions, arts-related audiovisual programs, symposia, lectures, conferences, and workshops by visual and performing artists. In addition to presenting a wide array of special exhibitions, the museum provides visitors with the opportunity to experience a global collection of art that spans more than 6,000 years. VMFA’s permanent holdings
encompass nearly 50,000 artworks, including the largest public collection of Fabergé
outside of Russia, the finest collection of Art Nouveau outside of Paris, and one of the
nation’s finest collections of American art. VMFA is also home to important collections of Chinese art, English silver, French Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, British sporting, and modern and contemporary art, as well as renowned South Asian, Himalayan and African art. In May 2010 VMFA opened its doors to the public after a transformative
expansion, the largest in its history.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a motivated individual that excels in
a fast-paced environment to join the Food Service & Events Department as a Food and Beverage Supervisor.

This is a non-exempt position without benefits, scheduled to work up to approximately 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30).

This position offers various Commonwealth of Virginia employee benefits such as free
admission to special exhibitions, previews of special exhibitions, employee pricing for
select museum programs and classes, as well as discounts in Amuse Restaurant, the
Best Café and the VMFA shop.

Duties include:

Supervise all front-of-house operations and staff in three different venues during various shifts: This is to include the Best Café, a fast casual dining area, Amuse Restaurant, a full service and upscale restaurant and various special events throughout the museum.

Experience in cash handling and point of sales systems.

Communicate with back-of-house staff to ensure guest satisfaction.

Ensure established food service protocols and procedures are upheld.

Understanding Food Services scheduling system and ability schedule staff as needed
Occasionally prepare event space for service.

Provide exceptional food and beverage service to guests

Resolve customer issues should they arise.

Communicate and resolve problems and issues that may arise during shifts

Assist managers with associate recruitment and on-boarding as needed.

Assist managers with associate performance issues and reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to handle face-paced, high volume situations.

Knowledge of various aspects of meal service and food items.

Ability to solve problems independently.

Knowledge of a full service bar and ABC standards.

Knowledge of cash handling policies and procedures.

Ability to use a point of sales system.

Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, holidays, evenings and weekends.

Ability to work as part of a diverse team.

Ability to take inventory of linen, glassware and other essential materials.

Ability to solve problems independently.

Ability to communicate instructions accurately.

Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to stand or walk for up to 8 hours.

Ability to work a flexible schedule to include days, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous special events/banquet/food service experience.

Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Special Requirements

Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
