COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG - WILLIAMSBURG, VA

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

As a member of the Art Museums’ design and production team the Technician, exercising high levels of skill, will fabricate, finish, install and maintain exhibition environments and display components with extreme precision according to written, drawn and oral specifications.

 

WORK TO BE PERFORMED: 

 

  1. Fabricate, assemble, finish and install gallery environments, temporary walls and trim in a variety of materials, including lumber, wood panels, composite panels, acrylic and PVC, using best practices and processes in a safe manner.
  2. Fabricate, assemble, finish and install gallery exhibition components, display decks, display cases, display panels and display case interiors in a variety of materials, i.e. MDO, MDF, PVC, Plexiglas, Dibond and others, using best practices and processes in a safe manner.
  3. Fabricate, assemble and finish metal exhibition components in brass, aluminum, and steel, using best metalsmith practices and processes in a safe manner.
  4. Prepare display environments, components and assembled casework for specified finish applications using best practices in a safe manner.
  5. Produce and finish fabric-wrapped display case blocks, wedges, risers, panels and interiors.
  6. Fabricate and install custom LED lighting components in display cases.
  7. Relamp the gallery’s ceiling lighting track fixtures.
  8. Load, unload, transport and restock materials and supplies deliveries and exhibition components.
  9. Finish, laminate, mount, trim and install graphics throughout the museums.
  10. Maintain, repair and replace the existing exhibition components and technology features.
  11. Install, uninstall, maintain, repair and store the museum’s seasonal interior decorations, including the Christmas tree(s) and Hanukkah display. 
  12. Clean and maintain the work areas, workspaces and tools, and transport the workshop and demolition rubbish to disposal and recycling facilities using the museum vehicles.
  13. Maintain the museums’ onsite exhibition storage spaces and the off-site warehouse and its industrial truck (forklift).

DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Project supervision will be from the Manager, Museum Design while overall supervision will be from the Director, Museum Design and Operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Must have experience using commercial woodworking and metalworking power tools, power hand tools, and hand tools usually gained by working in the construction, cabinetmaking or fabrication trades for 2 or more years. Studio art experience may be considered as an alternate experience qualification.

 

  • Must possess basic carpentry math skills and experience, including measuring, estimating, marking, squaring, leveling, sawing, drilling, shaping, fastening and finishing, usually gained by working in the construction, cabinetmaking or fabrication trades for 2 or more years. Studio art experience may be considered as an alternate experience qualification.

 

  • Must be able to work in noisy production shops, paint spray booth, and other production and maintenance areas for prolonged periods while standing, bending, reaching, and wear Personal Protective Equipment (eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and safety shoes) and other PPE as directed.

 

  • Must be able to work as part of a team or individually, with limited supervision and meet deadlines, follow instructions, and adapt to changing priorities and work non-standard hours, including overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

 

  • Must be proficient in the English language, spoken and written, generally gained through a high-school education or GED, to comprehend construction drawings, field notes, MSDS documents, and tool and equipment operators’ safety manuals and procedures.
  • Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license and be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, use freight elevators, walk up and down stairs, work on ladders, scaffolds, aerial work platforms and dock levelers.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Previous museum exhibition production experience.

 

  • 2 years’ experience in a commercial exhibition production shop

 

  • 2 years’ experience working with standard metalsmith fabrication processes for aluminum, brass and steel, working with plate, rod, tube, angle and square stock.

 

  • Experience working with and assembling low-voltage LED lighting components, AV components and controls inside cabinets and display cases is a plus.
