Reports to: Manager of Education and Historic Site Interpretation
Summary
The Education Specialist is responsible for administering student (K-12 and university) programs and assisting in program scheduling and development. Duties include learning and delivering existing interpretive programs; scheduling and coordinating student programming; researching content for new program development; and assisting with growing the museum’s student audience through outreach and relationship building.
The Education Specialist works under the supervision of the Manager of Education and Historic Site Interpretation
and will work closely with the Historic Site Interpreters, the Manager of Historic Engagement, and the Director of
Educational Programming.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Delivers programs using a wide variety of techniques tailored to each audience’s age, background, interests, and needs; facilitates educational and/or interpretive programs about potentially controversial or challenging topics
- Gives tours and programs at the White House of the Confederacy, Historic Tredegar, and when needed at Appomattox; provides day-to-day interpretive support, as needed
- Assists with booking and scheduling youth and student group programs; communicates with the Manager of Education to ensure programs are appropriately staffed
- Helps maintain accurate records of group attendance, identify and obtain necessary materials for educational programming, and develop reports on the progress of educational initiatives.
- Assists with the development and implementation of onsite family programs such as Spring Break programs, homeschool programs, Mornings at the Museum, and holiday themed programs.
- Attends front-line staff training meetings; complies with regular observations and feedback on program delivery
and content - Supports the overall visitor experience of the ACWM by providing exceptional customer service.
