The mission of the Science Museum of Virginia is to inspire all Virginians to enrich their lives through science. For more than 40 years, the Science Museum has served as the state’s flagship institution for informal STEM learning, employing a broad range of experiences to inspire and engage guests of all ages. Through experiential exhibits, inspiring artifacts, interactive technologies, live science demonstrations, features in the Dome Theater – the largest movie screen in Virginia – and touring exhibitions from around the world, the Museum presents dynamic science programming to hundreds of thousands of guests each year. The Museum is located in the iconic Broad Street Station in Richmond. The Museum also has a satellite location, the Danville Science Center, located in Danville, and is currently developing another satellite location in Northern Virginia.
The Science Museum is seeking a dynamic Director of Museum Operations who will be directly responsible for the overall guest experience at the Science Museum of Virginia. This position will provide leadership and oversight through hands-on management of the Museum floor operation departments, which include Guest Services, Museum Events, Special Projects, Special Events, Enterprises, Group Sales, Housekeeping and Security Departments, leading the business and service operations of these departments, developing operational strategies that achieve quality results and ensure a superior guest experience. Strategic and thoughtful, this position advocates for and implements new and innovative ideas for service and welcoming engagement.
Reporting to the Deputy Director and participating as a member of the Museum’s Leadership Team, the Director of Museum Operations will provide inspirational leadership and expertise in museum operation and is responsible for coordinating, implementing and administering the institution’s multi-faceted public experiences. The Director will develop and lead the implementation of the overall Science Museum guest experience strategy; evaluate the Museum experience and collaborate in the creation and implementation of practices to advance inclusivity and accessibility.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on, participative manager who will lead and develop internal teams, as well as external partners, will assist as needed with the implementation of new gallery experiences and programming and work closely with the leadership of neighboring businesses, attractions, and the larger Richmond community, to facilitate communication around operational issues.
This position works a Tuesday – Saturday schedule.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have broad comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of superior guest service and experience in a museum environment and be an organizational leader with a track record of successful management and decision-making. Outstanding analytical, problem solving and presentation skills. Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve results. Ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion to meet deadlines. Must have the ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment. Graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in the social sciences, museum studies, business, human resource management or a related field, or equivalent experience and training. Significant experience in museum operations and management, customer service or human resource management. The ability to develop, foster and strengthen relationships. Ability to execute job duties in a friendly, professional and timely manner. Work must be done with an eye for detail, friendliness and hospitality. Must be able to coordinate, manage and execute numerous projects simultaneously.
Must be available to work a Tuesday – Saturday schedule each week.

Preferred Qualifications
Spanish language and ASL proficiency preferred.
