The University of Virginia seeks a Director of Education to join the Virginia Humanities team.  The Director of Education manages all outreach efforts to K-12 educators on behalf of Virginia Humanities and in collaboration with its programs including but not limited to Encyclopedia Virginia; radio and podcast projects and programs including With Good Reason and the BackStory archive; the Center for the Book and Festival of the Book; the Virginia Folklife Program; and Community Initiatives.  

Reporting to Virginia Humanities’ Chief Information Officer, the Director designs and implements teaching frameworks using Virginia Humanities content to support educators and students across the state to engage them in current and historical issues that the humanities are uniquely equipped to help teachers and students explore and understand. The Director creates and convenes networks of teachers to share experiences and best practices in teaching challenging and new subject matter in humanities disciplines such as history and social studies and literature.

The Director presents projects at education organization meetings and conferences, giving talks and presentations; works with educators and students, promoting accomplishments and findings through social media and other platforms; and expands and extends the content and work of Virginia Humanities through education organizational and individual partners. The Director collaborates with Virginia Humanities staff in strategic planning for new project initiatives that take advantage of the latest digital capacities.

Qualifications

  • A thorough and up-to-date understanding of current history education landscape, including but not limited to textbook and curricula, standards and assessment protocols, and elective/AP courses.

  • Record of collaboration with partner organizations.

  • Solid project-management skills and experience, including the ability to set and enforce deadlines and manage a project timeline, with limited oversight.

  • Excellent writing/communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of collaborators, resolving conflict constructively.

  • Experience and comfort with public speaking in front of large audiences.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preference in history and/or history education.  Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • At least 4 years as a teacher or coach in humanities discipline at the secondary level is required.

Virginia Humanities offers a dynamic work environment and a wide array of statewide programming that will soon be managed from our new headquarters near downtown Charlottesville, in a facility specially outfitted for our unique work. We support a flexible work schedule, but fully remote work is not possible.
