The Hermitage Museum & Gardens is an early 20th century Arts-and-Crafts estate located on the shore of the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. The Hermitage features a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, contemporary exhibition galleries, a Visual Arts Studio, and 12 acres of gardens and grounds that offer art and culture to the community. Over the past five years, the Hermitage Museum & Gardens has achieved AAM accreditation, become a Smithsonian Affiliate, increased visitation by 250%, built the first new building on the property in over 60 years, added new programs and events to its schedule and launched a contemporary exhibition program with major internationally-recognized artists. It curated the first museum exhibition of The Art of Burning Man in 2017. Fundraising has increased in pace with the new initiatives, and the Hermitage is now preparing for an eventual capital campaign to renovate and expand its Visual Arts School and care for its historic buildings.

The Hermitage Museum & Gardens seeks a development professional with a minimum of 8 years of increasing responsibility in the development field and a proven track record of success in securing major gifts and sponsorships to assist with the growth of the institution. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated and able to work independently as well as in tandem with other department managers and the Executive Director.

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and is part of the senior staff. He/she is responsible for implementing fund-raising strategies in the areas of contributed income to include major gifts, memberships, grants, corporate gifts, planned giving, sponsorships, and special events. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will work closely with the board leadership and development committee to enhance the board’s fund-raising efforts, with an emphasis on major gift cultivation.


  • Collaborate with the executive management team and the board to develop funding strategies for the museum.
  • Work with the board, Executive Director and outside consultants to ensure a successful capital campaign.
  • Work in tandem with the museum board, the board liaison, and pertinent committee chairs.
  • Create, implement, and lead fund-raising strategies to generate contributed income from individuals, government, corporations, membership, and foundations giving resources.
  • Expand and develop the museum donor base and nurture existing donor relationships.
  • Spearhead fund-raising activities for all projects—special art exhibits, educational programs, public programs, environmental programs, collections care and conservation, endowments, and capital improvements.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Manager in the designing of development department collateral.
  • Lead and manage the Membership and Development Manager to retain, upgrade, and grow the membership base, and to coordinate proper follow-up letters and communications with donors and prospects. Supervise her efforts to find and write grants for programs and exhibitions.
  • Oversee and manage the donor database, prospect tracking systems, and donor acknowledgments.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum eight years of progressively responsible development experience, specifically with donor development, capital campaigns, and major donors.
  • Experience in arts institution or similar cultural organization preferred.
  • Management experience required.
  • A warm, engaging and accessible style is required.
  • Superior written, oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are imperative.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, display initiative, and exercise discretion and mature judgment are imperative.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Thorough understanding of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, human behavior and performance, and coordination of people and resources.
  • High level of comfort using electronic communications and internet tools, including email and social media, and experience with the latest development software.
  • Knowledge of donor database systems required. Experience with Donor Perfect is preferred.
