Introduction :
The Digital Historian is responsible for the management and coordination of Mount Vernon’s digital presence in the four main areas of the Washington Library: research, programs, education, and leadership. This position is the Editor of the Digital Encyclopedia and supervises other related endeavors to make historical information available to broad and diverse audiences in new ways. The incumbent will collaborate with departments within the Library and across the Mount Vernon estate to create effective social media strategies and to develop content for the education programs and the George Washington Leadership Institute. The Digital Historian will report directly to the Executive Director of the Library and will be a key participant in shaping Mount Vernon’s efforts to be a leader in historical scholarship, preservation, and education.
 
Essential Duties:
  • Digital Curating and Database Management
    • Solicit and edit content and manage all aspects of the George Washington Digital Encyclopedia
    • Develop and maintain existing databases and develop new digital history platforms
  • Development and execution of Library’s social and multimedia initiatives
    • Create and curate digital content for development of video and podcast production for the Library’s website and other social media outlets
    • Expand the reach of Mount Vernon’s mission by exploring new methodologies in digital scholarship and in emerging technologies
  • Production and Program Support
    • Serve as needed as on-staff faculty for Leadership and Education department programs
    • Teach classes and workshops on early American history and digital humanities topics
    • Support and promote the Library’s digital collections and provide statistical analytics of usage

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in American History or related field, ideally with concentration in colonial, Revolutionary, or early national U.S. history
  • Excellent skills for written and oral communication
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience in writing and editing for both general and scholarly audiences
  • Ability to supervise the work of 1-2 interns
  • Project-management experience in developing or maintaining digital publications
  • Understanding of best practices and standards in digital humanities
