Connoisseur Society Research Associate
George Washington’s Mount Vernon seeks a candidate for a year-long Connoisseur Society Prints Fellowship. The Prints Fellow works with the Assistant Curator and the curatorial team to catalogue and research the prints collection of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. As part of the Historic Preservation & Collections Department, the curatorial team collaborates with colleagues across the estate to preserve and interpret George and Martha Washington’s home. Mount Vernon boasts a rich permanent collection of objects that is exhibited in the historic Mansion and outbuildings, as well as the Donald W. Reynolds Museum & Education Center.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Researches and catalogues collection of approximately 2200 prints
  • Identifies gaps in the collection and makes recommendations for acquisition
  • Collaborates with conservator and collections management staff on storage arrangement, preventative conservation, and long-term care
  • Contributes research and writing to historic furnishing plan, including furnishing narrative relating to prints owned and used by the Washingtons
  • Other duties as assigned
  • M.A. in Material Culture, Public History, Museum Studies, History, American Studies, Art
  • History, or related field strongly preferred; B.A. considered with significant other experience
  • Prior museum/historic site experience preferred
  • Knowledge of eighteenth-century print culture and technique in the Atlantic World
  • Experience with collections management software; The Museum System preferred
  • Experience handling objects in a museum setting
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and creative
  • Excellent directed and independent research skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
