The National Sporting Library & Museum, a dynamic 501(c)3 with a $3-million budget seeks an innovative certified public accountant/administrator with non-profit experience to provide critical evidence-based thinking. This individual is responsible for budgeting, forecasting, and monitoring day-to-day business and accounting functions/operations, including payroll, credit, point-of-sale transactions, cash and investments, bookkeeping, and account reconciliations. The position serves as liaison to NSLM’s external auditors and makes reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. The position reports to the Executive Director.

Position Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Maintains the accounting system and processes, including accounts payable and receivable, bank deposits, cash management; and point-of-sale and website transactions
  • Produces monthly closes and provides financial statements and analysis.
  • Processes time records and payroll for all full-time, part-time, and temporary employees.
  • Develops annual operating budget with Executive Director, staff, and Board of Directors.
  • Oversees management and financial reporting of grants and restricted funds.
  • Prepares internal and external financial and regulatory reports for the Library & Museum.
  • Ensures sound cash management and supervision of bank accounts, including endowment.
  • Reconciles all cash and investment accounts and records on a timely basis.
  • Maintains banking relationships.
  • Directs the transfer of funds between Museum cash and investment accounts, in consultation with the Executive Director (and Board, as required).
  • Prepares checks, payments, and bank deposits.
  • Monitors and maintains all contractual agreements and pay schedules.
  • Establishes procedures to ensure that all assets and liabilities are accurately recorded and are reconciled to supporting internal and independent documentation.
  • Facilitates the annual audit and preparation of all required materials.
  • Prepares and manages the Museum’s Form 990 and related tax and information returns.
  • Implements, maintains, and monitors the total financial accounting systems and the internal controls over financial assets and records.
  • Directs the establishment, documentation, and fulfillment of accounting policies and procedures, as required, and exercises policy direction over the conduct of accounting operations throughout the organization.

Operations Management

  • Manages and fulfills all payroll functions.
  • Manages employee benefits (health insurance and SIMPLE-IRA).
  • Manages property insurance.
  • Facilitates new employee set-up and orientation with the Executive Director and senior staff
  • Tracks employee vacation, holiday, sick, and bereavement time to ensure compliance and reporting.
  • Advises on appropriate property and hearth insurance coverage.


  • Bachelor’s degree in in Accounting or Finance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience in a non-profit environment.
  • Solid expertise with QuickBooks required, plus other accounting software systems.
  • Thorough familiarity with HR processes, including payroll and benefits administration.
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and accounting standards.
  • Experience with automated financial systems, Excel reports, and website data management tools is also required.
  • Capable of translating complex information into digestible data and recommendations.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible attitude and troubleshoot.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Work cooperatively with others to set goals and enhance organizational development.
  • Must be attentive to detail and to overarching goals and able to thrive in a multi-tasking, fast-moving environment.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness in setting priorities.
  • Able to perform tasks independently, accurately, reliably, and in a timely manner.
